Tyke ruptured his ligament =( Well... We picked him up from the vet today. Poor little guy tore a cruciate ligament. He has to have surgery on the 24th...dropped off at 8am and will stay overnight. After that he will have it wrapped for up to two months...he has to be confined for a month so what we're going to do is go out and buy a massive sized crate/cage and put his bed and dish and toys and whatever else in there with him...and of course we'll hold him every chance we get...he just can't be running around the entire house after his surgery. I was so upset when I came back from the vet. I wasn't paying attention and ended up getting pulled over for going 50 in a 25   Cop comes up and at that point I had been bawling for a while...she thought I was crying cuz I got pulled over. I, being a loser, ended up explaining to her it wasn't about her, it was about my dog getting hurt and needing surgery. She ended up being really nice saying she understood and ended up not giving me ticket...she said I was having a bad enough day the way it was. ((Give it up for nice cops)) I came home and put Bubba on my mom's bed with her and then I got Tyke and laid him on my bed and we took a short nap (he had been sedated for his exrays so he was a very sleepy little guy). All I had to hear was the word "Surgery" from the vet and I lost it. My poor puppy :( I asked him if it was a risky surgery for small dogs and he said it's a very common surgery. The surgery will involve drilling holes somewhere and placing artifical ligaments along the outside of his knee joint. There was a new technique that they used called TPLO but Tyke was too small to be elgible for such a surgery. It'll be up to three months before he can completely use that leg again. I can try and begin taking him on small weeks within two months after the surgery and then gradually work up to longer walks. The surgery is estimated to cost between $690-$900. We don't have that money right now so I am going to take it from my tuition money and then just pay the minimum when the bill for tuition comes. I have about 5000 sitting in my account right now that was to go towards tuition but Tyke needs the surgery and there's no ifs ands or buts about it. I will quickly earn that back and then pay off the rest of my tuition instead of paying it in tull the first time. Right now, until the surgery, we just need to have him take it easy. We carry him down the stairs, if he wants on the couch we'll lift him onto the couch. Send him happy thoughts on the 24th...if something happens to the little guy I dunno what I'd do :( Thanks everyone :) -Melissa |
Magic and Sailor send lots of puppy kisses and love...you are in our thoughts and prayers!!! :getwellso Please keep us updated on how he is doing.... :lovewings |
Oh, Melissa, Im so sorry about Tyke. He will be ok. Others yorkies here had have leg surgery and being ok. Of course i dont know if is the same thing, but stay positive. I will have you in my prayers. Little Tyke, Gucci and I send soft kisses and huggies your way. Please keep us posted. |
Oh wow - that's very sad - I'm really sorry to hear that about your baby - it sure doesn't take much sometimes for things to just turn upside down does it? The good thing is you DO have the money - maybe your vet could work something out with you also for making payments if you need to - I hope everything works out for you ...Good luck ! |
Our big dog has had 4 surgeries on cruceate ligaments. PLEASE take my advice on this and let an orthopedic surgeon do it! Find a vet school or a specialist if you can! It will save you money and future surgeries in the long run! Don't mean to butt in, but I have lots of experience with this surgery. |
AWWWW, Sweetie. I am so sorry to hear about your problem-well, your babie's problem. Is your vet one of long-standing in taking care of YOUR dogs? If so, maybe he will work out a payment plan between you and him so your tuition is not affected? Worth asking, huh? 50-50 if you ask. 100% neg if you don't..GOOD LUCK! |
So sorry about little Tyke! Poor baby will be fine I'm sure but it will be tough helping him through all this! I hope your surgeon is knowledgeable and this will be the only time he will have to have it. We will keep him in our prayers! |
If your dog was a professional athlete his career would be in great jeopardy with that injury. Hope the little guy will be able to come out of it ok. It's going to be tough with him not being able to walk for months like that but hopefully he will be able to be his normal self after all the recovery is over. Good luck. |
Oh, I am so sorry!! I am glad he will be able to be fixed up though! Also glad you didn't get a ticket. |
Thanks everyone =) Has anyone ever had a yorkie or small dog or heard of a small dog getting this surgery? Did they come out okay? I'm really worried that there's gonna be a problem ebcause he is a small breed Melissa :aimeeyork |
I am so sorry to hear about little Tyke, i would take eensors advise and talk to an orthopedic surgeon tho.Having it done right the first time is well worth it in the long run. |
I'm so sorry about little TYke! I know when Simon has had his 2 surgeries (not on his legs) I was so scared so I know how you feel. We will be thinking about you on the 24th! Please give Tyke lots of kisses for us! |
Melissa, Sorry to hear about your lil Tyke needing surgery. You might be able to find a used crate to keep him in while he recovers or borrow one. It was sweet of the cop not to give you a ticket !! Puppy kisses from Mya. Keep us posted. |
