Personality change
 

We've had our Brody for about 2.5 weeks now. He's been through a lot. He was openning up each day. Then he had a fall. Actually, he jumped from my husbands arms. He landed rough, but was okay. It took several days, but he started trusting my husband again. He seems to have some personality quirks now though.

We did take him to the vet today to make sure nothing was wrong. The vet checked his eyes, tested his back and legs. She checked him for fleas and skin irritations. She couldn't find anything to suggest why he was behaving the way he was. Of course he didn't show any of his quirks while we were there. She did express his glands thinking that might be the problem. They were full, but nothing too bad. We were also given some meds for inflamation, just in case. We're to come back in if the behavior doesn't clear up in 24-48hrs.

I guess I'm looking for some assurance that he just needs time to get over his fall since the vet can't find anything wrong. :)

Ever since the fall, he's playing less often. He's sleeping more and actually walks to the bed in his pen instead of sitting with us like was doing. He does like to play, but only for short periods. When he does play, it's like nothing is wrong. Then he stops dead, sits down and looks at us. He might even start to growl, give a little bark and try to bite his butt.

We'd been trying to get him used to coming upstairs and hanging out with us on one of the beds. He used to check out the boundries and be a little nervous, but nothing big. Now he constantly circles and tries multiple places to get comfortable. It's almost frantic at times. He growls, barks and bites his butt. If I sit cross legged, he'll try to push his body sideways under one of my legs and try to bury his head. It was disturbing to see. Once back downstairs he'd be back to his happy go lucky self.

Now he's even doing it downstairs. He practically dug a hole to china in his bed today and tried to hide under his blanket. He alternated that with his growl, bark and scooting of his head in the bed. He even refused to go for his walk. He gets all excited when you tell him it's walk time. We'll get out there. He'll take a few steps and might pee. Then he sits down and refuses to move. I'll tell him "let's go" give a slight tug and we're good for a few more steps. He used to love his walks.

My husband says I'm over reacting. That maybe now that he's been here a bit that his real personality is coming through. Not the "oh my gosh I've got people to play with all the time now" mode. So he's calming down and making his own boundries now. Could he be right? The vet says she can't find anything physcially wrong with him. Could it be anxiety? Am I being silly worrying so much? Please tell me if I am. I'd be happy if that was the case. Then I could stop worrying and just enjoy our lil' boy. :)

I dont have any words of wisdom for you but sending warm thoughts your way! Sam digs like that and buries his head sometimes, he mainly does when he is tired.

Im sure someone will be able to give you some words of wisdom.

Kiki does act like that (very distressed, biting at her butt) if she has a flea....and she also sometimes digs at her (or our) bed....but as far as to the extent you're talking about....it does sound a little odd!

I would agree with your suspicions. Sometimes Yorkies take a while to get over falls or being startled. All you can do is try to treat him as you would normally. Try not to baby him. He should get over it just fine.

Thanks y'all. It's nice to know that some of his behavior might be normal. I've been thinking about some of the things y'all mentioned. I think his digging might be related to him being tired at times. He was getting to bed later and later. We're now going to give him a bed time like the rest of our kids. :)

I'm also beginning to wonder if his teething could be contributing to things. He seems happy as a clam when on my lap chewing on his hoof. He looses all tendencies to nip in the areas we thought might be hurting him. He doesn't spin or whine either.

I never imagined bringing him home would be so worriesome. LoL

The first thing that comes to mind . What kind of food is he on.?Are his poops hard? I was told by the vet when tede was so sick hard poop help with the glands. BUt I am sur other people that are more experenced can help more. Tede had lots of these kinds of stuff till I changed his food.

p.s. yes tede had times he just wanted to be under his blankets when his teeth were coming in. I would do Ice chips and rub it on his little gums. It was good now he let me go in his moth for teeth brushing.

Both my boys have 'times' where they settle down no problem, and other 'times' when they CANNOT seem to settle down and get comfortable, digging their way through the mattress on the bed/couch/their bed/blankets/my lap, etc... to get comfy, only to get up 2 seconds later and do it all over again. That will go on for days and then they will be fine for a month, then another couple days of not getting comfy again!

Recently my fletcher has been going to his bed at night FAR away from me and his brother when he used to lay on my lap. Now I normally wouldnt care, but he does it with his tail down and his ears down and looks all meek and scared. That makes me sad.... hes in his house, nothing should scare him there! However he is the BIGGEST chicken in the world & is fearful of EVERYTHING lately, dishwasher, running water, trashbags, bowls (that I eat ice cream from:confused: :confused: ) and most recently... swatting mosquitos that get in the house sends him FLYING from the room and shaking in a corner! :confused: I used to worry so much... now I let him stay in his bed all night if that is what he wants. I do not know how to alleviate his fears. Once I sat on the kitchen floor with him in my lap and MADE him stay while I ran the dishwasher through. I put him up to it, made him touch it and I touched it and spoke gently to him... but nothing, he is still soooooo scared of it! (not of the washing machine or vaccuum cleaner though.. go figure)

I guess crazy behavior or personality quirks happen from time to time with their dogs... Im sure it will pass!

It seems like I read doing circles and rubbing the head was an indication of a poss. liver shunt?
