Dawn Dishwashing Liquid as Shampoo?? Hi. My Yorkie has the same oily hair problem that many of your dogs have. I've tried all the shampoos that have been recommended on this forum, and she still looks like she hasn't been bathed in months 3-4 days after I've shampooed her. I Googled this problem and found that many Yorkie owners bathe their dogs in Dawn dishwashing liquid. They mix a drop in a cup of water to dilute it and then pour over the dog. After lathering and rinsing, they follow up with a good dog shampoo. They say Dawn cuts the grease and is gentle on the skin. Anybody out there ever try this? I'm thinking about it, but thought I'd get some opinions first. |
I havent heard that before..I know that you can use Dawn to kill fleas, though. Maybe someone else can help! |
I know they recommend Dawn for help with oily hair in humans, but I have no clue about dogs. It kills adult fleas so my boys have been getting baths in it but I use minksheen or pantene after the dawn bath. |
I'm a groomer and have used Dawn on very oily dogs - however it does pull the natural oils off the coat and may dry the skin which causes them to scratch. have u tried Quadruped Shampoos? I changed to this shampoo years ago and LOVE IT. I use the protein shampoo on my oily dogs and rinse really well. Sometimes if u dont rinse really well the coat gets oily and matted. www.quadrupedpetcare.com good luck |
My mothers dad and step mom does this, they say it works, I'm just to scared to try it. |
What about Neutrogena clarifying shampoo? That cuts excess oils out of hair. |
Yep - you sure can. My vet actually recommends it all the time for his patients. It does help kill fleas ;) |
Head and shoulders also kills fleas, but it's not to be use each and every time you shampoo the dog. If there is a flea infiltration then shampoo in the head and shoulders to get them off, then put 20 drops of rosemary oil into 16 oz. of your regular dog shampoo to keep them off. |
My groomer also recommended Dawn. I don't use it every time, I switch off and use head and sholders and pantene. Dawn does a great job. I also use conditioners and brush almost daily. |

I have also seen Head and Shoulders work but it doesn't work for all dogs. |
