Mean Mommy?!? Hi !! :) I am a newbie to this forum and a newbie to puppydom (is there such a word?) I have 2 yorkies, Missy & Beau that I have had for about a year and a half now. Missy recently (1 week ago) gave birth to a bouncing baby boy !! ...My question is: I realize that the mommy instinct to protect is natural, but is it normal for her to actually attack Beau (the daddy) totally unprovoked? I have Missy and the baby on a totally different floor of the house and Beau never goes anywhere near the baby but Missy will at times seek him out and it is an all out fight. Other times they coexist as they always have, but these fights come out of the blue. Is this normal? If so, when will it get better? If it is not normal, what can I do about it? One other issue I would so appreciate input on is: I will be traveling the first part of July and I always take my pups with me. Will this in any way cause a problem with the new puppy? He will be 4 weeks old by then. It will be a day and a half trip by car. I do not want to do anything detrimental to him, are there any concerns with this type of trip at this age? Any ideas, thoughts, suggestions and tips on these issues will be most appreciated ! |
Hello WELCOME!!! I'm Melissa. I am not sure on this but, I am sure someone will answer your post. We are a close knit community. |
Welcome to YT! I am Fran proud mom to Sammi...I can't answer your question either...But you have come to the right place to get an answer... Good Luck! Fran and Sammi |
Im not sure about the search and destory mode, But I do now that it is common for mothers to be very protective of their puppies, some family pet's wont even let the family near the puppy, now that's not because the dog is mean,(and in your new momma mind what she's doing is totaly justified) It's because they are being a mother and every mother is differnt. She is just highly over protective I'm guessing and as much as she gets along with beau all other days of the year she has a puppy now and may since him as a threat. Remember we can't think of them as people because they are not and they dont think like us either, So right now try to think like her. Remember what we may see as mean may be normal and fine to them, but is something we are going to have to figure out carefully. |
Hello to you, Missy and Beau and a warm welcome to Yorkie Talk. :p Regarding the fighting, it sounds like Missy is just being a "protective Mama" but cannot say for sure. Does she feel ok, not been sick or anything to make her cranky? I am not a breeder so cannot give you any concrete advise but still wanna welcome you to the best Yorkie forum around! ;) Id love to see pics of your fur babies if you'd like to share too! :aimeeyork |
Dawn, I wanted to welcome you to YT and congratulate you for your new puppy. Im so sorry I can't help you in this matter but I know that some of the breeders here can. Good luck. |
hello and welcome to Yorkie Talk!! I'm sorry, I can't really answer your question either but can you blame her?! If someone put me through all that pain and misery I'd probably attack him too!! Just kidding - I hope you find your answer here... |
When Keno was born his mother "Puddin" didn't want the daddy "Jake" near her babies at first, but eventually she let him and he started licking and taking care of them too. |
If you don't get the answer on here why don't you post the same question in the breeding section of the forum. Maybe someone there will be more helpful than us. Welcome! |

Yorkie Talk would rather not have "duplicate" threads in multiple sections of the forum. °•Ðåwñ•°™, I can move your thread to the breeder section if you'd like if you feel there might be more responses or leave it as is. :D |

I guess I picked the general topic area thinking that most people would look there as well as other specific topic areas. To answer your earlier response...I would love to post pictures but it tells me the pics I want to post are too big and I am not quite knowledgable enough to know what else to do with them ! :questione  |

Regarding the resizing of pics this link should help. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1994 |
Hi! :p I am not a breeder so I can't help. Just wanted to say welcome and congrats on your new baby. |
Last year my female had 2 babies and started attacking the dad too she would be fine 1 minute and then the little neck would stretch out like a goose and go after him this year we had another litter and she has only went after him 1 time but she attacks my other female alot if she is too close to the pup... I think she is being protective and warning him what will happen if he comes anywhere near her babies. I suppose she dosent know what he will do and is not willing to take a chance on having him too near..(ours were kept in our bed room and she would peek out to see if he was anywhere near and if so she would get him..) I think as your pups get older she will relax.... Our male actually was going in the box and sleeping with this last pup was so cute and mom did not mind this time. Moms can be very possesive and protective of their babies.. I would just try to keep them apart from each other and keep him well away from her babies.. I started using a spray bottle with water in it and kept it handy and would squirt her when I saw she was going on the attack, she would back off then when she saw I had that (she does not like to get wet though) |
