litter born (not mine) litter born two days ago. This is about a local show breeder (friend of a friend) Her story just goes to show you what can happen when you're not paying attention. she didnt know the mating occured until about a week ago (sneaky little men they are) once realized she did a vet check and xrays (4 puppies) Destracted by overseas company arriving, she entertains her in-laws without keeping an eye on mommie. Retires for the night, wakes real early, makes coffee realizes mommie isnt around. She goes into the whelping bed, finds mommie had whelped two puppies. Sad to say they were dead because mommie took the cord to short and they bled out (had this birth been supervised they would have been 2 thriving little girls) Quickly the next two puppies were born and doing well healthy little boys. Wanted to share what happens even to a seasoned breeder! Heart ache and guilt! if only! |
I am shaking my head, that really is terribly sad. :( |
But wait, she knew she was getting close but left her alone? Company or not I would still be with her day and night. My dogs are like my kids and I wouldnt leave my kids alone in a stressful situation. I understand things happen, but that could have easily been prevented. |
This is really sad, I imagine she is feeling bad about this... sometimes life happens and we can't be at all places at the same time. edited to ask- since she knew it was close, was she checking her temp? that is how I knew we were getting close, and my girl delivered a week early. I hope that things go well with the other two, and they bring her lots of joy :) edited again- to correct spelling. |
That's really sad. Poor little pups :( |
It happens.. Glad to hear the two boys are fine..sorry for the girls. My friend, Sheila and myself had two females who were bred a week apart. She called one morning and said her girl had her litter during the night in the same room with her other dogs. Fortunately, all was fine ,no one bothered her and the pups until Sheila got up. I really let her have it...how irresponsible can you be??? The next morning I got up and checked my girl, she wasn't due for 4 days and all looked fine. She was laying in her bed and got up when I came in the room. I just about died, her belly was flat as a pancake...her pups were in the bed with her sister and she was playing nanny. My other bitches were in another area, good thing, some would have fought over the babies. This mother had NEVER whelped under 64 days, I always get up at 2 or 3 AM to check on close to whelping girls, no sign of pups, it just happens and you feel like such a boob! Crow is not a tasty dish...Sheila and I had a good laugh. |
Sometimes, experienced and seasoned breeders will lose a puppy for any of a number of reasons. If the puppies were indeed PREEMIES there might have been an abnormality present and the mom, especially if she had whelped before, could have had a problem with the cord..Just a thought.. |
