Stubborn Yorkie My male yorkie is a little over 6 months old. We absolutely love him to death but he is the most stubborn little fellow. He will not come when we call him. He just sits and looks at you and will run if you try to get him. Any ideas on how to train him to come and not run? |
My goodness I don't think I have ever heard of a stubborn yorkie:D My Murfee is 3 and he still won't come when we call him but at least he doesn't run away anymore....at least when I use my mean mommy voice. Good luck, Patty |
I wish you luck! when someone finds a good tactic to fix this, I wish they would tell me... d |
tell me too. Cody is 5 months old and he won't come when i call and when i go to get him he runs . he is FAST. |
Have you tried the infamous 'clicker' that is sold at most pet stores? It's a simple noise maker, that very rarely do dogs hear it so when they hear it, they're alerted. There's techniques to it though; because they don't know what it is, you train their ear to hear it by 'click, then give a treat. click, then give a treat' with no commands attached like 'sit' etc. Just a simple repetious doing over and over and over, a few times a day. Eventually, they'll catch on that when you click... you mean business. |
I have one that is like that too. She wont come to me but when it is bedtime she becomes my best friend so she can sleep in our bed:rolleyes: |
Sadie's a great little dog, but she pretty much will come to me when she feels like it - :p |
Remy has been fairly easy to train to come. I keep treats in my pocket all the time and when I call her I show her the treat, when she comes I tell her shes good and give her a treat , then I walk up the stairs and again call her ,show her the treat andwhen she comes she gets the reward. I keep working her towards the house calling and rewarding.I try not to grab her unless its necessary, the idea is to get her to come and follow me willingly. If they dont come never scold them as then coming to you can then be a negative thing ,always make it a positive experience. Remy is still not rock solid on coming when called but she is about 75% of the way there. Good luck with your pup and keep working at it ! Eileen |
I had a trainer at my house and also found this advice in one of the monks of new skeet books. Put your yorkie on a long lead - they sell them at walmart for about $6. it should be 15 or 20 feet. You'll need at least one person to help you. Have someone to take them out to the end of the lead and then you are at the other end and call. If they don't come, you pull on the lead. You can even do the same thing with a group and you all stand in a circle and toss the lead to the next person. I personally don't use treats for this only positive praise. It becomes a game for them and you might see that they actually enjoy it. And never yell at your baby after they come to you no matter how frustrated you might be or how long you may have had to chase them you have to praise them. Also, a trick I saw on It's me or the dog is that if they run off, call them but sit or lay on the ground. This will spark their curiosity - at least thats what she said- and they will come back to investigate. I have not tried that myself yet .... |
Yorkies, stubborn? naaaah lol Try teaching him to come with treats. Show him the treat, then back up a little and tell him to come. When he comes to you, give him the treat. Keep moving back a little more until he gets it. Or, you can use toys in place of treats. good luck! |
And I thought i had the only yorkie ( 9 months old) that looks at me like I am an alien when i call him!! :) lol he has selective hearing when it comes to my calling him to come...when we are outside and i call him to come in ..ignores me...When i go up the patio steps and reach the door and he sees that ...he comes running and up the stairs!!!! :D When he has paper in his mouth and i call him to come...he ignores me!!! When i approach him and he starts to take off i tell him sternly I am not going to chase you!! and he will stop and let me take the paper out of his mouth!!! crazy huh!!!?? But love him to death!!! Good luck on the training and I may have to try some of the suggestions made here too!!! |
If you really NEED them to come to you...don't chase them, they'll think it's a game and run like the wind. I did bait Winston with treats and plenty of praise to teach him to come. Now he just comes without treats, or if he's getting into something he shouldn't or he may get hurt if he runs, I just tell him to sit...and he'll sit and wait for me. But of course he's 3 years old, but he's done this for a long long time now. It's important they know not to run...to avoid an accident or incident that may be devastating. Work on it, they really are fast learners and want nothing more then to please you...so be happy when they listen to your commands...I mean really happy!!! |

All you have to do is train them. 10 minutes training sessions. if you come home in the evening do two or three sessions and in a weeks time ur dog should be able to be trained to come.. keep up the training sessions and make them fun even after a skill is learned. Training your pet to come is good to do with a partner. If you don't have a partner, training to sit and stay first is a good thing. u can do it on leash or off leash. On leash is better for those who have really stubborn dogs. You can do it with a treat or without. I have found that a lot of HAPPY HAPPY silly praise will go a long way. You have to let your dog know that coming to you is the best thing in the world. This means that you need to praise him/her like crazy when they come, before you do something that may not be so much fun to them, like baths or teeth brushing ect. stand about three feet from your dog if your alone or have someone stand three feet away holding your dog. IF your along you definitely need a leash. tell him to come and make it exciting. when you say come gently pull the leash toward you (with a great doggy treat in hand if possible). For those with a partner do the same. IF your partner is a stranger then your dog is prolly gonna be really excited to come back to you with or with a treat, and with or without a leash. Keep doing that between the two partners for a a few 10 minute sessions a day. For those who are alone, keep putting him.her in a sit stay and repeating for the 10 minutes. I found that the first day of sessions seems like there is no progress. The dog is just learning is you say come, sit, stay, or whatever, then it means do xyz. The amazement comes in the second and third day when they actually start doing what you say, even if its not perfect they are learning. and by the end of the week they know. In three weeks time, if you are dedicated they should have learned the skill. I found that teaching Ryo before his evening meal is great because i can use his dog food, and he is anxious to do whatever i say because he was hungry in the first place. Remember the key to your dog coming to you is making it the best experience ever for him! Just 10 minutes and even when you don't see progress keep doing it make it fun and it will work. Ryo is stubborn as well. I had him trained perfectly but since he is following me all the time i don't need to use come a lot, so now I am in a phase where i have to re-practice that with him to get him back up to speed. I have to redo heel as well. But he sits stays, and goes down really easily with no treat. I hope that made sense, just make any small play time with ur baby a small training session, and you will see a world of difference. Oh i forgot make the distance between u and ur dog larger little by little once he or she has mastered the basic COME command |
