Biggie: Escaping from the crate Our Biggie is crated while we're at work. In the past few weeks he's discovered that if he bats at the latch for the crate long enough he'll eventually get lucky and get it completely unlatched to let himself out. Has anyone else experienced this? When he gets out it appears as though he plays joyfully and rests on the bed peacefully. We do not have any problems with him going potty in wrong places, tearing up or destroying anything (other than chewing on paper) and he seems very happy and content when he's able to get out of the crate....almost proud of himself for figuring it out. At this point we're not sure if we should get a lock for the crate or if we should just let him be to roam the house while we're at work since he appears to be causing no harm when he's out? well, it might make him depressed if you now lock him in. if he's not having any troubles i say let him go. but you may want to make sure all your wires are up or inaccessible, the doors to places he shouldn't go are closed or the hallway is blocked off. yorkies are so smart! he thinks you put him in there as a game! hehe |
Aubrey has been doing this, especially at night. Why don't you leave the handle out where it latches to the crate, straight out in the air. Understand what I am saying? Aubrey has yet to get out of this one! |
If he's not getting into trouble, you probably don't want to crate him. If he likes your bed, can you get a baby gate for your bedroom, contain him in there with his water, some toys and his pee pad? On one hand, you don't want him to be unhappy in his crate. On the other hand, you don't want him getting hurt by accident. Try giving him more room. Judy |
armani has had free roam of the downstairs for the last 3 months and he does just fine, he seems better with free roam than being in the x pen |
Since he's not getting into any trouble, maybe he's ready for some more space. Try keeping him contained in one room with a comfy bed, plenty of toys and chewies, food and pee pads and see how that goes. Use a baby gate to keep him in there. Or, maybe an expen. He might get upset being locked into his crate since he has had some freedom. |

He has that "what did I do?" face! He is cute. Nomi was doing this Houdini act and we have been putting her in the crate and then turning it around so the front door and side door each faces a wall in the corner. Your baby sounds like a gentleman. When Nomi gets out, everyone knows. She can tear up items out of spite and cause havoc. Im with judyeve, I'd gate him in an area with water and toys and see how he does. |
You got great advice here. He is telling you he needs more responsibility; I mean space. |
