A Little Chubby!
 
Well, a little chubby is a bit of an understatement. I just adopted a little girl into our family. She is 5 years old and was desperately needing a new home. Apparently someone in the home LOOOOVED giving her lots and lots of treats, and she is terribly overweight. She should probably be about the same size as my Nigel (8 lbs), but she is far exceeding that. I feel just horrible about it. I've put her on NutroMax Weight Control food, and we will be giving her tons of exercise. Does anybody out there have any more advice for me? I'm hoping that my wild man Nigel will keep her moving so that she will slim down a little, but I'm open to any suggestions!

when I was a little girl, I had a poodle that somehow :rolleyes: got terribly overweight. We mixed her food with green beans. She lost the weight! Maybe though, she isn't fat...she is just fluffy!!

LOL! that's so funny :) if only that were the case... bless her little heart, my little boy was having a hard time picking her up and holding on to her. he's used to picking up light as a feather baby boy! the green beans are a neat idea! i just don't want the weight to affect her health. we love her no matter what :D

and thank you for the congrats! we are glad to have her!

All you can do is what you are already doing - healthy diet DOG food, lots of exercise, and a minimum of treats.

I just wanted to say congrats and how nice of you to take in this new puppy. Have fun with your little guys.

I have a little "chunky monkey" at my house also. He is a year and a half old and is on a special low protein diet for his MVD. He weighs 6 lbs and should weigh about 5. He gets tons of exercise but is such a little pig. He is always stealing the other dogs food and he's quick too. I may have to take more drastic measures. I've already stopped free feeding all of them.

I may have to break out the doggie jail for meal time. LOL :(

"Congrats" on adopting your Yorkie girl. :) Sounds like she has a wonderful forever home now. :) I don't have any suggestions for you, other than my two love green beans.

Congrats. Did you take her to the doctor? How much does she weigh? Aubrey weighs 12 lbs, but hes not over weight, his just a bigger size yorkie. WElcome to YT!

Is there any reason why you want him to be 5 lbs? Not trying to be mean, but I think 1 pound over weight, isn't bad. :rolleyes: My opinion.

But it is when they are truly overweight. Loki is 12 pounds and should be 11. He packed it on with treats and no exercise over the winter. I reduced his food and cut back on the treats. So far it's working but slowly. You don't need to switch to a weight control food. Just ask the vet how many calories she should be eating and feed that amount. If you need to do training, just hand feed the kibble instead of putting it in a bowl.

Sammy is skinny but VERY fluffy - people think she is fat because her hair is so thick, and then they pick her up and she weighs nothing!

I've seen people that SWEAR by this too - good post girl !!

Good luck with your little chubbo - it probably would be good to get her weight down - for the sake of her little legs. My Chanel is no feather either and I'm always trying to figure out how to get her to lose a pound or 2 - it's not easy to do - especially with other dogs in the house -

I didn't think it was a big deal either but I had him at the University of Tennessee for testing (MVD - liver issues) and they are the ones that told me I need to get his weight down. It's just not healthy for them to be overweight. He has a pretty small frame and you can see that he is a little overweight. I really hate restricting his food but I don't want him to develop issues from his weight also.

i think i'll see if she will eat green beans! i've heard this from 3 different people now. i wouldn't be so concerned if she wasn't so obviously overweight. i'm concerned that it can't be good for her little heart. much like people, it's so hard on the body when you are more than just a little fluffy ;) thank you for all the well wishes! i will post photos of the two little angels soon! the ones i took yesterday are kind of sad since they were prior to his bath after "nigel the wanderer's little 2 day excursion"! he looks like a ragamuffin in the pictures! he's pretty now, so photos soon to come!

1 pound is a lot when you consider that he should be 5 lbs. Look at it this way, he is 20% overweight.

An excess of 20% is very hard on his heart. Taking the weight off will literally add years to his life.

I have a Porky Yorkie as well and the two most important things are portion control and exercise.

It is VERY important to use a weight control food. It has less calories but still fills them up. If you use a regular food but just cut back, then the bile acids in their stomach can cause them to throw up. Ask your vet how much he should be eating of the weight control food and then divide that by his number of feedings. Tucker needs 5 oz of his food a day for weight loss and I feed him twice a day so I use a 2.5 oz scoop to measure out his food. Its easy and that way I know that he is getting the correct portions.

As for exercise, Tucker loves to take really long walks but sometimes I'm too tired after work. He really really loves to play frisbee so when I'm too tired to take him for a walk, we go into the back yard and I throw the frisbee for him to fetch. I can throw it really far and he loves to run out and catch it which is great exercise for him.

I'm glad that you realize the overweightness (is that word?) is a problem. i believe obesity in dogs is a major cause of death. i hate it when people just don't pay attention to their dogs diet, and feed them anything, and everything all the time. Dogs need a strict diet of healthy food, just like humans in order to stay healthy. I feed my dogs twice a day, and no more. A little treat here and there also. Don't give in when your dog looks at you and begs for food. Its hard, but its for their own good.

well, little miss seems to be doing ok on her new diet. she begs for food a little bit less as she's figuring she's not going to get anything so why waste perfectly good nap time! we are going on walks, and she gets tired, but she's a trooper. she loves baby carrots, so she gets a couple of those as treats for when she goes potty outside. the funniest thing ever has to be her LOVE of catfood... usually my kitties eat all their food at one sitting (they are not free fed because of my glutonous Emma kitty). well, occasionally they do not finish, and my little hungry gal is more than happy to finish for them. i got wise, and pulled the cat food and put it up on the countertop. well, Emma, who is keen on playing with her food before eating it, thought this was a great idea. she jumped up on the countertop and started flicking all her food piece by piece into the floor! well, little miss vacuum was right there to take care of that little problem. it was the funniest thing i've seen! she even has Emma kitty on her side to get her snacks!!

I am so happy your little man found his way home, the weight issue is hard with another dog and a cat, she always going to sneaking bite when you are not looking, I had to put Ichabob on science diet RX w/d, he was 15lbs, it work but he also had no treats, he was a dibetic.
