Anyone know about Silica packs and dangers Pixie's tummy is upset tonight and she won't eat which is very unusual for her. I found 2 little beads that appear to be those silica beads they put in the packs in purses and shoes. I have not seen any of these in the house and only found 2 beads no pack and someone was home with her nearly all day. I don't know how she would have eaten a whole pack even if she found one. She did seem to drink a few times more this evening. Does anyone know how dangerous these are to dogs. SHe just threw up now. Please help |
I just called Animal Emergency and the lady said that they weren't toxic, but I am going to keep an eye on her for a couple of hours and take her in if she throws up again. I do not know if she got in to something else. |
they aren't toxic, i'd watch her if i were you though. she should be fine:) if she's still not doing well tomorrow, though, i'd bring her to the vet |
Do you think they would make her sick? She threw up again. |
my girl ate them one time and vet said they were toxic and that i needed to make her vomit right away. I don't really remember but i think he told me to give her a very tiny bit of hydrogen peroxide, not sure but i do know she vomited alot after. You should call vet. Good Luck hope she's fine, |
they probably would make her sick.. i'm not sure, i know they use them in some cat litters though |
Hope this helps! Silica Gel Packets Silica gel is used as a dessicant and often come in paper packets or plastic cylinders. They are used to absorb moisture with leather, medication, and in some food packaging. Silica is considered "chemically and biologically inert" upon ingestion. However, with ingestion, it is possible to see signs of GI upset, such as nausea, vomiting, and inappetence. Additional problems could occur if the silica gel was used as a dessicant in medication, since silica could possibly absorb qualities of the medication. another one - Silica Gel Did You Know…The statement “DESSICANT- DO NOT EAT” commonly found on the little packets of silica gel contained in medications, leather goods, certain pasta products and vitamins is not really as ominous as it sounds? Silica gel is used to absorb moisture in many different products, and is usually packaged in plastic cylinders or paper packets. Silica gel is also used in certain cat litters for the same purpose. While it is indeed true that it is not meant for consumption, with most ingestions silica gel produces only mild stomach upset which typically resolves with minimal to no treatment. If very large quantities are eaten, however, such as with ingestions of multiple packets or mouthfuls of kitty litter, intestinal obstruction is a possibility- especially in very small animals. In addition to offering information online at http://www.aspca.org/site/pageserver?pag... the APCC also runs an emergency hotline - 1-888-4-ANI-HELP - that provides round-the-clock telephone assistance. |

I'm glad you took her to the vet - better to be safe than sorry. Sounds like she will be fine though!! :p :p |
Awwww, poor thing. How is she this morning?? |
Patti, I hope Pixie is doing better today. :aimeeyork I didn't see your thread last night. But on "Good Friday" of this year, Rudy ate a little bit of a silcone pack. The pack was still there but I'd say 1/2 of the insides were gone. I called the ASPCA poison control hotline because I didn't think our vet would be in that day. My Rudy weighs 14.5 lbs and the vet I talked to there said that the crystal like beads inside the packs aren't poisonious and since I still had the pack in my hand, the beads will come out in his poop. The vet did say, if Rudy had eaten the pack, that could cause an obstruction and that could lead to a problem. It didn't seem to effect Rudy at all. I was sure scared though. Sorry you had to go thru the same thing, but Pixie is so much smaller than Rudy, so I'm sure I would have done the same thing you did. |
I am so thankful for posts like this! I wouldn't have even thought about those. I am very sorry your little girl is having GI problems. I hope she's feeling better today. |
Poor Baby.Get Well Soon :getwellso |
Thanks she is doing better today just ate a little and is still not as active. I am going to give her a quick bath as she threw up all over her crate and self on the way to the vet last night. SHe is a breeze to wash so it will only take 15 minutes and then she can go relax again. |
i'm glad she's feeling better:) |
