Off leash yorkies,,,,do they exsist? My lil monster loves to be in everything. The biggest problem lately is her running off. When you open the front door she pretends she is going to play with you, but then she takes off down the street. I have owned many dogs before, but this one is an Albert Einstein. She is extremely smart. Which, for the most part has been great to my advantage, as far as potty training, tricks ect.... Will she ever calm down on the running away trick, will she ever be an off leash dig, that comes when I call her name? |
I rarely use a leash, only when it really necessary/dangerous. My dog never runs away from me. I had a couple situations when some people tried to punish me that I don't take care of my dog. excuse me:mad: , I DO take care of her, but I do know her very well also. She knows that she CANNOT step away from sidewalk. I feel safe, but people just don't understand that she is very smart and listen to me very well:( . |
have you taught her 'come'? Or to heel on leash? Once you teach those, you can teach a dog to heel off leash and they should come whenever called. |
I'm sorry but I'm glad I'm not alone. Allie use to be so good and I could leave the front door open and she would just stand by. NOW on the other hand is a totally different story. I have 4 kids so when we go to leave everyone has to group up and run out the door. She is fast and just takes off never looking back I swear she goes 90 MPH. I know her route now I've had to chase her so much. She will run all the way to the end of the street (dead end) then comes back by our house (full sprint) and she will look at me with this huge smile plastered all over her face like "ha ha look at me, you can't catch me I'm the runaway queen". I've got to stop this, it's driving me nuts I just have no idea hopw to get her to stop doing this. We go camping alot and I use to get to take her with me and she'd stay right there, no worries. The last few times we've went she's had to stay home, for fear of her getting there and doing this and someone or something snatching her up. Which bites because I really enjoy taking her with us. |
I saw something on tv the other day, about teaching your dog to come. Everytime you call their name and they come, give them a treat. I am going to try that. If this doesn't work, she is going to doggie school. The reason I haven't sent her is because they keep her for 5 weeks, that is so long |
I have never had a Yorkie( I have had 5) that I would completely trust off leash. My pom is very good off leash but I am aways right next to her just in case. |
they keep your dog for dog school? I don't think it pays to have someone else train your dog (if that's what they do) Try a course where you take her, then she learns to obey your commands, not someone else's. |
That would scare me to death! Jake has never ran from me. Try taking treats with you when you take her out, and teach her "come" and "stay" and give her treats and lots of praise. |
She could when she gets a little older. Chachi used to run lke that too but he quit when he was about 1 1/2 and then we could take him off leash |
Sasha I can trust somewhat (i would never trust out of the yard) Seth NO WAY:eek: he would call from another state "hey mom come and get me I am tired of running now" treats do not work with him. |
My 2 always have a leash on, especially Maddie who took off overnight last year, but they are getting better without me holding it. Is there a fenced in area you can take your baby to? If there is, just work with them there. Another thing I've taught all 3 of my dogs is "car ride" and "inside." If I'm outside and one of them starts to run, all I have to say is "Inside!" and they'll run to the steps so I can catch them. and if they run out the door, I yell "car ride!" and they run to the car. Those are helpful if they don't come to me. |
I don't have a yorkie like that but I do have a jack russell Miss Gracie that will run flat out forever and never look back, she is a rescue dog, we have tried everthing with her and nothing works, she even has to swim with a leash on.. I got a 50ft training leash so when she does run we can catch her. my yorkie was never like that he was a home body... we have tried the treat thing but when she zone out forget it she not lisenting to anyone.. |
Conner and I are attending school starting next Tuesday. He does not come when I call him - he thinks it is playtime and runs away from me!! He will sit, but only when he sees the treat. My mom and dad's dog, on the other hand, stays next to them off leash. He is very well trained (I think it helps that he is afraid of everything, whereas mine is afraid of nothing). |
My baby does that. When he goes out to do his business i have him on his harness. i bring him back in and i go out to clean it up (living in apartment) and before i can get out the door he has done flew out. and of course i spend 20 mins or more chasing him. i freak out cause im afraid he will get ran over. i tell him to come here and it doesnt work. i keep chasing him. i finally catch him. cant wait for that stage to be over. |
My Yorkie, Munchkin is usually pretty good about not darting off. she usually listens to us, but keep in mind usuallly. also, she's so small, she can't run that fast, and i can catch her if I need to. i hardly ever use a leash for her. so for the most part she's good. also, my bichon/poodle is pretty good too, but i definitely need a leash for her. if she sees another dog, she'll run off in second no matter what. i really don't think i'll ever be able to train that out of her. well, maybe the Dog Whisperer can! |
