We got another Yorkie Today and need some help please Ok, i got my first Yorkie back in like late march early april, a little girl. Well my sister had gotten my niece a little yorkie boy for her bday in december. That was a HUGE mistake as my sister does not like animals. She does this alot, gets her kids an animal and then takes it away. Well I felt really bad for my niece so i ourchased him from my sister so that way at least my niece would still be able to see him. She loves him so much. Ok I have a few questions as top how to care for this little guy. he will be 1 in November, he is NOT potty trained at all, my sister never took the time with him, if my niece was at school or at her dads, my sister never did anything for the porr little guy. So how do I get him housebroken, what method should I use? Also he has a bit of an attitude, he will growl at you, and I do understand that this all comes from the way my sister treated the poor little thing. he weighs like 4.2 pounds and he is just hiking that leg up on everything, i ahve never gotten a male before that wasnt a young little puppy, and I do know that he is still a pup and can learn this, but i just dont know how to housebreak a little boy, how do i correct him when I catch him hiking that leg? i dont want to overwhelm him since he didnt have it very good with my sister. oh what about a name change, do you think he could adjust to having his name changed?? Thanks |
He'll definetly be okay with a name change seeing as he'll be properly cared for know. Has he been neutered? That helps a real lot. All I can say is take him out a lot, and praise and treat like crazy when he goes. It's going to take some patience on both your parts considering where he has come from, but hang in there and it will all be worth it. Let's see some pictures. |
I wish I had an answer for you, but I don't. I'm sure there's lots of people here who will though! I just wanted to say how sweet of you to buy the dog from your sister, to ensure it has a loving home, but also so your niece can still be with it. It has to be pretty devastating when you're young to have something you love and have no say-so about whether it stays or goes. I think that's pretty sad. But the puppy and your niece are really blessed that they have you! Hope you can get things straightend out...just remember, that dogs live to please us, so I'm sure any problems he's got will resolve with love and consistency. I personally wouldn't change it's name....or I'd ask your niece what she thinks about it. I did get a bird (I was at LEAST it's 3rd owner and it had been a wild caught, imported bird, so no telling how old it really was by the time I got her) but the lady I bought her from called her "big bird" UGH...such a beautiful creature with such a generic name.....I changed it to Nova, and she did just fine....so I guess it wouldn't be so bad. And besides, now that I think of it...I call Max about a hundred different things...Maxi, Maxalicious, dogalicious. baby dog, cutie patootie, Maxil, sweetiepie....he answers to all of them, LOL....., so I take it back. But I'd still run it by your niece just to show her a little respect, which I think might make her feel like she hasn't lost the dog totally. :) |
Yorkie boy It made me smile when I read about the growling. When I got my poodle, Elvira, as a pup, she was a growler. I took her to puppy class when she was about 3 months old and when I mentioned to the trainer that Elvira growled and I was afraid of her, she just laughed at me. She said, "You're afraid of a 5 lb dog!"- she couldn't believe it!. She's 13 years old now and still a growler but has never been a biter and of course I am not afraid of her. I always wondered if perhaps she was the runt of the litter and had to growl to protect herself. I know I adopted her from a family with an Akita who tried to kill her so they had to give her up. Sometimes you'd like to know what happened to these little doggies before you got them. |
you really need to confine him to a small area of your home at first and start by taking him out in the morning and maybe every hour if you have time but make sure its on a schedule. Thas just until you figure out how long he can hold his pee then adjust your schedule to taking him out every 2-3 hours and make it longer until you get him on a good schedule that is appropriate to yours. once you train him, then u can give a bigger area of the house , but do it in small amounts, Like mine could only stay in the living room, then i let him go in the living room and kitchen area and so on. Mind you my apartment is small. He is not allowed in my sons room which is empty anyway because for some reason he marks up my sons room if my son is not in there. also get a book or go to a website that gives more details on how to do it. Look at different teaching methods and find the best that works for you. i found that most methods are the same with little changes here and there. I got my boy when he was a year old and he adjusted well to his name change, cause i am sure they called him something at the breeders home for a year... but yeah make sure your niece is ok with this.. if your main focus is for your niece to be able to interact with him i wouldnt change his name |
here is a good link for help. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/woof/tips/index.html I actually bought this video for my son its really nice. I think they sell it on Amazon |
Thanks you all 1 Attachment(s) he is done pretty good so far this afternoon/evening. Oh.... he is a cutie.... I would've snagged him up in a heartbeat. Congrats on your new addition. I just think he is handsome. |
First of all: CONGRATULATIONS on your new addition! You're a wonderful person for thinking about your niece AND your new fur baby. I'm still a yorkie talk newbie here, but I've heard of people using belly bands and putting maxi pads in there to prevent male yorkie's from marking their territories in the house. And I agree w/many others here to confine the amount of space for your new addition. I would also try to have some sort of a potty schedule so that he'll know when to go potty. As far as the name change goes, I agree w/the others too. You should ask how your niece feels about the change first. Best of luck to you and your new fur baby! :D |
I'm not much help here, but just wanted to add that my boy is the BEST pottier of the group :) Way better than the girls who still have accidents :) |
I have to agree with everyone else so I dont have any more input...just wanted to say how super cute he is! What is his name now??? Dawn |
