Should I do something about it? So that whole theory about not going potty where they eat and sleep. With Coco, NOT TRUE. While sleeping at night, she'll go in her bed (she has a plush, zipup bed so she doesn't get out). I wake up in the morning to take her potty on her pad. She will normally go, but occasionally she won't go #2. So when I come home from work, I have a little surprise in her crate. Should I do something about it? But she's so tiny and there's only so much she can hold in right? I have now been folding puppy pads and placing them in the back of the crate. At least if she has to go, I can encourage her to use her pad. Am I teaching or encouraging bad behavior? :confused: |
Unfortunately, I believe you are encouraging bad behavior... We had originally bought Annie a bigger crate than I guess she needed. They say that rule of thumb is big enough for them to sleep in and turn themselves around in. So in the bigger crate what she would do was sleep on side and pee on the other side. (If you notice she probably won't actually sleep on the half where she goes potty/poop). If you don't want to go out and buy another crate maybe there may be a way you can close of the extra space until you house broken her. You need to teach her to hold it in (as far as poop goes you'd be surprised how long they can hold it in) (I've learned this from our frequent plane trips) and only go where it is acceptable to go :) |
I dont know. It could encourage bad behavior. I agree with the above post by eroar2 in saying that she should only have enough room to sleep. You can't be mad because your Yorkie goes in her cage. She probably can't hold it if she is a small puppy. Hopefully someone on here can give you some more advice. good luck! |
Bella did that once and I think she then learned what happens when you poop in your crate (you sit with it until someone comes home and cleans it up!) and has never done it again. Give her another chance to see if she'll do it again. Hopefully she'll learn through trial and error. |
I've thought about getting her a smaller crate, but the thought of her being in that tiny thing all day, just sleeping, makes me sad. While I'm at work she's in there. Wouldn't it be too small for her? Wouldn't she get bored or sad in there with no room to move around? I know I'm encouraging bad behavior, but I just don't want to make her sad. She doesn't care if she sits in there with poo, because she does it in the way back end, where she doesn't get bothered by it...haha...smart dog |
What if I blocked off the back portion of her crate, where she goes, so she has a lot less room in there? Would that help you think? Is it mean to give her less space for 7-8 hours of the day? |
Bella's crate fits her food/water tray and her bed. I also put toys in there for her. But I've been home from work before and really, all they do is SLEEP all day! lol! Gosh, the hard life dogs live huh? I think you are fine. I know it sounds cruel, but this is part of their training process. If they can hold it through the night, they should be able to hold it through the day right? Besides, I'm sure she's sleeping most of the time. Just put some toys in there for her to play with. And dont put a pee pee pad in there to encourage her to go on it. You want to get it to a point where you know she can and will hold it all day so you can not have to crate her during the day and she can just hang out around the house. |
Ok I will try that tomorrow. I will, instead of buying her a new one, block off most of her crate. What about at night time? She pee's in her bed. I have to wash her bedding every day because I don't want it to smell like urine. It would be hard to block off her bed area because it's a plush, zip-up carrier/soft bed. Do you think she'll get the idea if I do it with her crate? She'll just know not to go in bed either? I don't even leave water for her in her bed area anymore, so she won't need to go pee. |
I think if you start taking her out every 3 hours or so during the night to go potty.. she will learn that she shouldn't potty in her bed. because as much as my Wookie will want to roll around and sit and lay on his puppy pad, he will never pee or poo in his bed... aka, my bed :D he jumps off the bed, which wakes me up.. then i run to take him to the pad.. he goes right away, and comes back to sleep.. im hoping he will soon learn to jump off and go pee on the pad and come back to sleep. I think making the crate a little smaller with a towel or sponge material or something might help.. but if she is peeing in there, then she clearly needs to go, and cant hold it anymore... my wookie usually only goes once a night, and hes almost 5 lbs.. if your puppy is smaller, she might have to go more? but i definately think you need to change the crate set up soon, otherwise, she will think its ok. |
hhhmmm.... do you take her out or have her pee before she sleeps? I'm not really sure how to deal with it over night cause Bella sleeps in my bed with me so I know her pee pee pattern now. My boyfriend and I take the dogs out before we go to bed (both dogs sleep in the bed with us) and in the morning Bella would wake me up and we'd go outside for her to pee. Maybe if you make sure she pees once right before bed time and then early in the morning, set your alarm so that you take her out to pee again and put her back in the bed. So she gets used to a pattern or make sure she doesnt have a lot of water intake right before bed? |
wait, i dont think its a good idea you leave her in a crate like that for 7-8 hours while your not at home... i think thats good for at night.. in the room with you.. but during the day she needs to be able to move around more.. your crate sounds like one of those travel crates.. i dont think its a good idea to leave her during the day in the same thing that she sleeps in.. thats just my opinion.. i think that should be for her at night, if you decide to crate her.. and then something big enough for her to sleep/play/and pee in during the day that allows her to see out and you to see in easily. |
She's 1lbs. 5 oz, and I take her on her pad before she goes to sleep (she pee's when I pee..hehe). She whimpers at like 530am and I wake up and put her on the pad and she goes again. But when I check her bed, it's a little wet in there too. I don't get it. I don't let her have water in her bed or even a hour before bedtime to avoid it. I can't have her sleep in my bed because if she jumps off she will get hurt, she's too small. Maybe I should set myself an alarm to wake up at least once a night, to check to see if she has potty. Or what if I put a puppy pad outside her bed, and closed off her bed and pad area? Maybe she will step out of her bed to pee and go back in her bed to sleep. Do you think? |
One thing you might want to try with her bed (cause you said that is a plush) is maybe put a plastic liner on the top right now while she is so young. Because it is plush, the liquid may just be getting soaked up and that may just be enough for her to tolerate it. But if you put on the liner it will not soak up and she will be forced to lie in it. She won't like that all :rolleyes: That might help her get the message to try to hold it in or let you know somehow that she has got to go. As far as the crate goes, if you don't like her being there for long period of time (7-8 hours) As she gets older and the more trust her. Open more space off for her very slowly. Use Xpens, baby gates, etc.... |
She is still very young... You will more than likely have to wake up a few times at nite to take her potty. I remember the first few months that we had Annie we (I say we, but I really mean me) didn't get much sleep. If you want to do it right. I would get up every couple to few hours and take her potty. I can't remember when exacly it was I had to stop doing the laundry for her bedding, but I tell its a great feeling! |
I was nervous about Bella sleeping with me in the begining too. When I first got her, she was 1.9 lbs. But she slepted with us from the very first day and she's gotten used to it. She's never been hurt. Now, when its bed time, she runs up to the side of the bed, jumps to put her paws up to be picked up. Its so darn cute, its like a baby when they want to be held, they just wave their hands in the air. How old is your pup? Maybe she's still so young that she needs to go every 3 hours? |
