My Yorkie ate a Candle!! My Yorkie somehow managed to get on the table.......still trying to figure that one out?? and get the pillar candle out of the candle holder and onto the floor to eat it all in about 15 minutes. He didn't eat the whole thing, but about 3 inches of it. Has anyone ever experienced this? Is he going to be okay? What should I do?? |
candle I don't think they are toxic..the wax isn't I know...he get a loose stool from it. I would call the vet and ask them what they think and watch him..good luck. |
I would guess a candle can really clog the digestive system of even a human. I would take her to the vet. |
My vet is out of town on vacation, but I could try to take him to another one, but was wanting to get advice first. I was thinking I read that parafin oil was toxic and I thought that wax was made out of parafin?? |
Im not sure but I would think the candle would act like a laxative? It would be better to call your vet and see what he or she would recommend. Sami eats more things outside like dirt rocks, pincones etc.. and I really have to run after him to retrieve him from him. not to much fun because we worry about everything because they are just like babys they are oral everything to the mouth  Please keep us informed just in case our babies eat a candle. good luck and try not to worry also keep an eye on his stools. |
wax Since the wax is inside the body, it is warm there and will stay soft I would think...are you old enough to remember those wax candies shaped like lips or coke bottles? We swallowed them, at least the kids I know did...never hurt us. |

YorkieRose I never thought of that! I do remember eating those candies. Does that tell my age?? And yes, I was just fine. I guess I was thinking it would harden and stick together and form a clog, but you are right, the body is warm. Hopefully all will be fine. Who would've thought he'd eat a candle?? My wife is on the phone trying to get a hold of the vet that is filling in for our regular one and I will let you guys know what he says. |
I always ate those wax bottle things, that had juice in them. Doe any one remember those. |
Update The on-call vet said that there is nothing to worry about. He agreed with YorkieRose---wax is not toxic, and it will stay soft in the body and come out in the stools (he said to expect loose stools for awhile). He said it is similar to young kids eating crayons. He said that some candles are made with animal fat products and that may be why our little yorkie was attracted to it. Needless to say, we are moving our candles up high (about 5 ft) and out of the way. Thanks to everyone for their help. |
I'm thinking a candle will make his stool loose, not clog him up. Little stinker, they'll chew on anything, won't they. :p |
good news That is good news! I try to think back to some of the stuff my dogs, kids or myself have swallowed in all the years. I had a Yorkie eat a bunch of those small latex bands..the poop was full of things that looked like worms..I went running to the vet and he said they were the strangest worms he has ever seen..rubber ones..! All's well that comes out well! |
oh im missed this post i glad hes ok :D p.S i loved those wax lips they still have them in some stores |
