Severe anxiety when left alone, any advice??? Hi there, I've had Bailey now for 3 years, I got him when he was just 8 weeks old. I love him with all my heart and soul (everyone loves him) but... If ANYONE (it's the worst with me) leaves the house he goes out of control. He starts barking, crying, pacing and sometimes pees on the floor while in the midst of all this. He's even nipped at myself and other family members as we're leaving the house. I've tried to practice going in and out of the house many times to get him used to it, i've tried giving him a kong with peanut butter in it as i'm on my way out the door. I'm terrified that he's going to have a heart attack or hurt himself when he gets this upset. Does anyone have any suggestions? I've gone through 2 trainers and 2 classes with no success. :animal-pa :confused: Thanks in advance for your advice! |

Maybe getting another dog would help. |
I agree with Sondra. It probably would help a little. But, you need to remember that your yorkie is missing YOU, which is why he is so sad when you're gone. Another dog might help him be distracted and pass the time a little more easily, but you should really resolve HIS issues first before adding another dog to the equation. I thought this was the answer to Emma's problems too, and our behaviorist strongly cautioned us against this. We needed to concentrate on helping her work through her issues first, which is what we did. Otherwise, you run the risk of having TWO anxious yorkies because one can pick it up from the other :( |
This one of the reaseon that I'm getting another yorkie for Phoebe she stress a lot when I'm gone, but I watch Cesar Milan and he said not to make a big deal when you leave and come back, just act like nothing,no by baby I miss you blah, blah, blah, and watch your energy too they can pick up that you are nervous leaving them alone ; it took time but she is getting much, much better :thumbup: |
I leave my robe or a piece of my clothing on our bed. That seems to help her. She sleeps on it when I am gone. |
I got Cisco to keep Samuel company, they love eachother so much now! I also had Samuel on Reconcile for a while, its a medecine for puppy's while training but also for separation anxiety, kinda like doggy Prozac. He was on it for 4 months and then we lowered his does until he was off of it and he's been great ever since! |
separation anxiety My female does not like to be left either. I ended up buying another dog to keep her company. One thing I would recomend is taking your dog for a big walk prior to your leaving. This tires them out, and gets rid of a lot of built up anxiety. Also, leave without making a fuss. My male could care less if we go anywhere! Good luck |
Terrible Separtion Anxiety Hi, I have exactly the same symptoms of separation anxiety....I keep her in her crate but she will make a mess of it...she's a wreck when I'm gone....I'm not sure if she was born this insecure or it was something that happened prior to arriving to us. I haven't been able to figure it out but have also tried all of the "techniques"---In order to avoid the mess, I now have a crate that allows for a potty pad below....I think it's a genetic defect myself but I'm not an authority....she also barks non-stop when I'm gone and runs out a the crate like a nut to get water. She's probably been running back and forth for the whole hour! I feel terrible about it but luckily she's small and gets to come with me alot! |
Tilly had separation anxiety so bad. I took her to my vet and he gave me pills for her but I felt bad giving them to her because all they did was make her sleepy. So I refuse to use them. It was terrible to leave her home. This past June we got another Yorkie and it cured her anxiety. Unfortunatly we had to rehome her back to the bredder because of agression issues. But since then Tilly still has been fine. No accidents or anything. YAY! |
You know I recommend watching Ceaser Milian (not sure how to spell his last name) on A&E or the National Geographic Channel or get his books or check it out online. My Teddy has severe separation anxiety. I try to carry him around all places I go but everyone tells me that is making the problem worse not better. I've tried behavioralists, and such, and while we make progress, he tends to regress back into old routines. So, it's not as bad as it used to be, although I have to put him in my room whenever I step outside of the house. Otherwise, there will be the loudest, but curtling scream you ever did hear. But, you get used to it!:D |
coping with seperation issues My Little daisy had severe seperation issues too! She's scuttles along side me and looks up at me waiting to see if its her turn to go. She begins to whine, and tries to cut me off by walking in between my feet.I take her everywhere except for work and school. Bit what I've realized that works is identifying the situation to your dog. with Daisy, everytime I leave and intend on taking her, I pull out her harness and leash OR her doogy bag. This tells her, " YAY! I'm going!" and without it, she knows. So now, she walks me to the front door, sits on command, then when I close the door she looks out the window and watches me pull out the driveway. :D hehe. She's so darn cute! |
I wish there were something I could do for this! I've tried meds for it too, but I couldn't take giving it to him (it didn't help either), he didn't even get sleepy on it. He gets so mad when we leave that he'll go pee in the middle of the floor when we leave. Or when we come back home, he'll pee on the floor in front of us (after he's given us the cold shoulder)...LOL... he is one of those stubborn dogs that has a mind of his own.
