9 week old puppy scared of strangers - help? My 9 week old yorkie generally gets along very well with other dogs, not matter what their size. She's also very comfortable with everyone in the house. However, whenever we'd bring people/strangers over, she wouldn't approach them. She doesn't bark or show hostility, but just shy away whenever others want to pet her. I really want somehow get her to be comfortable around strangers, because this can possibility avoid risk of hostility sometime in the future. I tried by putting her on the person's lap and then getting them to feed her cheese or treats, but she refuses to eat unless it's being fed by a family member. She won't even eat dinner when it's served by a stranger. Can someone help me out here? I might bring my yorkie to one of my friend's house (he has a puppy, an iguana and 2 baby leopards) to get along more with other animals, but it seems her fear is in other people. it's not like she ever had a traumatizing experience of being hurt by another child or person in her life... Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! |
Can you take her to a park? If not, you can always take her to Petsmart/Petco. Because she is so young, it probably wouldn't take her long to warm up to strangers. You definitely wanna do it before she gets older.. then it'll be much more difficult and a potential embarrassment. |
We actually have a dog park that's just a few blocks away from us, but I'm not sure if it's safe to bring her there because everyone who brings their dogs there are HUGE. I usually wouldn't mind, but my yorkie is VERY energetic and plays very aggresively with other dogs, so i'm scared that bigger dogs may snap or try to bite her like my friend's pomerainien. We always have new people coming over to our house. It's just hard to get her to approach them whenever others want to pet her :( |
By the way, I forgot to mention and I should rephrase that when others give her a treat, she DOES eat it, but in a very quick way as in wanting to take it and walk far away as possible and then enjoy the treat without giving any attention to the stranger. Should I keep allowing others to feed her treats, so that she'll come back for more? |
Give her some time she still small, as soon she have all her vaccinations then you can take her everywhere and she will be fine:p |

When a stranger arrive in your home , take the little one in your arms and introduce her to him or her . After give her a treat . |
I think Diego's idea is good, and so are the other about getting her out more. |
From what I have heard....she is still at a VERY impressionable age and 9 weeks old is actually considered to young to be away from her mom. She also cannot be fully finished with her shots yet and it is not recommended to take her anywhere except vet until her shots are complete. She can still pick up many fatal diseases. If she were having issues with strangers at say 16 weeks I'd say work on socialized her, but right now, I dont think she should be socialized at all...too young. In my opinion and from what others advised me to do on here, keep her home safe and sound and her confidenece will come naturally. Then if she is still shy and timid acting work on it later. :D Hope this helps and good luck! |
