Bringing home my baby girl tonight! Hi everyone! I am Cheryl and am bringing home a 9 week old yorkie/silky mix tonight for the first time. This is my first puppy, and feel very grateful to have found this site! I have learned a TREMENDOUS amount from all of your knowledgeable posts! Thank you ALL! I have a couple of questions: 1.) I know that every pup is different, but generally, what should I expect during the night tonight? I am planning on keeping her in my room in her comfy crate so I can hear her (with the blankets with the moms scent on them). Should I get up during the night and take her to the potty pads? Or just leave her alone if she's not fussing? 2.) Any suggestions on how to locate a vet that may have specialty in small breeds? Thanks to you all in advance! Looking forward to getting to know you guys and learning more! ~Cheryl |
Congratulations and Welcome to YT Cheryl. How exciting for you to be bringing home your new furbaby tonight. There's a good change she may cry being alone without her mom for a couple of nights. Good idea about the blanket with her mother's smell. If your using pee pads I would just let her go on the pad in the create. I wouldn't set a pattern to get up during the night with her. I did a couple of times and my vet said do I want to be on his schedule or do I want him on mine. So I stopped getting up. That 's nice your putting the crate in your room. A towel over the top may make her feel more secure during the night. Good luck and post pictures if you can. |
Congrats! I hope everything works out. |
"Congratulations" on getting your new furbaby girl tonight. :) :aimeeyork It's only been a little more than a year that we've had Rudy but I remember I kept him in his crate all night. But I can't remember if I got up every now and then and left him outside to pee. Sorry. We just use the vet that we had for my mom's dog and my sister & SIL go to the same place also. You could ask around, maybe where you getting your new little one ask them the vet question. :icon5: "Good Luck" on your lst night. :goodluck: |
I know you are excited! Advice about nighttime--don't wake the puppy up to go potty. She will start getting you up every night. Try and take her out to potty right before bedtime. We try to do this with Oscar, he usually won't go and is about to pop around 5:00 a.m., but Emmy will go before bed and can sleep in and hold it better. Good luck--I can't wait to see pictures!:D |
:welcome4: to yt and congratulation on your baby, one of the first thing I did was to buy a good book abour yorkies, pups under 4 months old often are not able to hold their urine all night, if your puppy has settled down to sleep but awakens and fusses a few hours later, she probably needs to go out, your pup may soil in her crate if you ignore her late night urgency, I did wake up in the night and put her in her pad, Phoebe is 100% potty train and the only time she had a accident in the crate was when she was sick, now she sleep with us:p she is part of the pack. |
Congratulations!! I've written a pretty comprehensive article on my website that should explain a lot things on taking care of your puppy, feeding it, and a potty training. Just follow this link: http://www.swankpets.com/toy-breed-p...e-101-a-4.html Anyone else is welcome to take a look and offer any comments or suggestions on the article. I'd like to know what everyone else thinks/agree/disagree upon on caring for toy breed puppies. Thanks! |
Welcome and congratulations!!! I can't wait to see pics because I don't think I've ever seen a yorkie/silky mix before.:) I wouldn't wake her up to go potty during the night, but if she wakes up crying, I would put her on the pad just in case. If she goes, make sure to give lots of praise. Then, let her get settled back down. If you want her sleeping in her own bed or crate every night, try not to give in to her cries. Once you start letting them sleep with you, that's pretty much it.:D My little guy has always slept with my husband and I, and we love it! I wish you the best of luck! How exciting for you!!! Please do let us know how tonight goes when you get a chance. |
CONGRATS!!! Cannot wait to see pics! |
Welcome to YT! Congrats on your new furbaby! :) Def can't wait to see pics... The first week or so, she'll def be a little nervous and would prefer to be thisclose to you. Daisy slept in her crate from day 1 and usually cried when we went to sleep. I would throw a towel over her cage and she woukd sleep better and longer. As time goes by, she willl be more comfortable with her surroundings and will then begin to ''explore'' the house. :p that's when the puppy proofing should be in place...they're naughty little things! :) May the fun times begin! |
:congrats: on your new baby! :welcome4: to YT! |
