Yorkie Soft Spot
 
Hello

I joined last night cause I have lots and lots of Questions.

Maya has a soft Spot and the Vet said it's kind of big for her being so small. He said it might take up to a year to heal IF it heals at all. Is there anybody that could tell me about there experience with it - research did not realy make me feel any better.

Welcome, I am not sure about that.. I don't think that Aubrey has one and if he does, I don't know anythign about it :confused: . You have to come to a great place to ask questions!!! By the Way, Welcome! :welcome4:

Sarah had open fontanel all her life . She died 3 weeks ago at 11 years old .
If your little one is healthy , you'll just have too look that she don't bump her head against furnitures or fall on her head . Sarah lived a perfect life without problems .

Welcome to YT I hope you stick around. This is a wonderful site.

I can probably answer any questions you have. When I got Adie the vet said the same thing. I was really concerned until I found out that it could take a long time to close. She is 13 months old now and it is still there but it seems like it is shallow like it is healing from the inside out rather than closing from the sides. Does that make sense? We don't worry a lot about her banging her head. The vet said it would be hard to penetrate just by bumping it but we have been careful to make sure that she didn't have a lot of sharp edges at her level. The brain isn't as exposed as we imagine. There is a thick membrane covering it as well as the flesh.

Anyway. Adie is healthy as a horse and more active than any pup I've ever had. She is also the smartest one I have ever had and I have had many. Of course she is my first purchased dog. I have always had rescues in the past.

So PM me if you'd like to and we can be "hole in the head" buddies. LOL

SORRY if I missspell things (I am still learning - after 8 years of marrige :D ). Thanks for some Info. I am just realy worried this will be an issue later on. My Vet said if it is not closed by the time she is 12 months there will be some Problems. I did not even notice that ( WHAT KIND OF A YORKIE MOMMY AM I ???) - my friend did on our Playdates with her Pug and Rottweiler. Yeah crazy - huh - they LOVE her and play realy good with her.

Anyway it is the size of a 25 Cent piece and I read some realy upsetting things when I Googled some links.

I hope she will be fine - she is a very smart, playfull, sweet, activ, (defelish if she wants to) puppy. But always an :littleang for Daddy. HA HA

The soft spot you are talking about is called an open fontanel. It will not "heal", but it may close up if it is small. If it has not closed after six months of age, then it will likely never close. If it is as big as the size of a quarter, then it is pretty big and I don't think that it will completely close.

The problems your vet is referring to is that many dogs with open fonts develop hydrocephalus if the open font does not close. I would not worry unless she is showing any clinical symptoms of hydrocephalus. It is possible for a dog to have mild hydrocephalus with no problems.

I have two yorkies with open fonts. Lily has moderate hydrocephalus with many neurological problems. She is very very small, shakes, cries out, get confused easily, and is blind in one eye. Her prognosis is poor. Dixie has a very small open font with mild hydrocephalus and does not have any clinical symptoms although she is very small. Her prognosis is good.

Search through some of my old posts for more information. You should inform your breeder about the open font as it is a hereditary condition and she should not breed the parents again.

You are not a bad mom! My vet found Adie's. Although it isn't as big as Maya's she (the vet) did say it was large. I'd say it bigger than a nickle but not as large as a quarter. I would also recommend letting the breeder know about it. AND I still say don't worry about it. I think hydrocephalus is the exception rather than the rule. By the way, my brother's first wife had an open fontanel and she in her sixties now without EVER having any kind of problem. She even got hit right on it when a carpenter dropped a hammer on her head. She had bruising and a concusion but would have had that anyway! LOL.

My Eury has a soft spot that the vet found and commented that it was a little large for her size so it could either take a long time to close (up to a year or more) or never close at all. He told me to just be aware of it and check it once in a while but not to worry about it. He also told me that while they can sometimes develop problems many many times they are perfectly fine. So basically he said to just be careful she doesn't bang her head "too much" and to just be aware of it.

Open Fontanel Soft Spot
 
My 3 1/2 pound female had a large open fontanel. The vet told me to keep an eye on it and to keep her away from rough playing with the other puppies. The vet told me to watch for bulging eyes and odd behavior. A tooth through the soft spot would be bad! She is now six months and it is almost completely closed.

I do keep Adie away from larger dogs in case they try to mouth her or bite her. Ivan is the exception because he is so gentle he never abuses her. His favorite game with her is rolling her around on the floor by nudging her with his nose. She loves it.
