I got Diggys pedigree in the mail, and I am noticing a few abbreviations after his parents and grandparents names. Like AKC DNA Anyone know what those are, and what they mean? I had not seriously thought about breeding Diggy, but I have had my first serious approach for him to breed with a guys Yorkie. I know I have my work cut out to find if he is breeding quality so I figured understanding his Pedigree would be a good start. ;)

akc is his registry....AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB. DNA just means a swab was done on the male and sent in to have his dna recorded just in case down the future there is a question about who is the daddy.

Also, AKC requires a DNA on all male dogs that are used for stud three times a year or seven in a lifetime. You will probably need to get DNA on your little guy. the kit is free from AKC but you have to pay about 40.00 to have them do the test.

Okay on the the web site it says DNA that it means a dog is genetically clear of disease? I wonder what diseases that means? Ill just keep reading unless someone knows off the top pf thier head.

Is DNA a good thing to have done on all dogs or just dog's your breeding?

Is this something I should do only if I decide to breed him or something I should get either way? At what age should I do this?

No DNA does not mean it is genetically clear of any diseases. The DNA will be his genetic code so that if he does sire any offspring and there is any question that those are his offspring, the pups can have a swab taken and their DNA compared to the dam and the sire.
If you wonder if he is breeding quality, find a local dog show with someone showing YOrkies, long time breeder I mean, and ask them to evaluate him for you. THey should be able to tell you his strong points and not so strong points and whether his is indeed a pet quality or not.
If he is not just a pet quality you might consider showing him.

I never knew DNA would be taken on stud dogs after 7 breedings.
