Making sure that 'break away' collar really is! I bought this collar for Susanah http://www.petsmart.com/global/produ...294961557&Ne=2 I thought because of the clasp that it was break away. It is NOT. After seeing a post on here where a collar got hooked on a baby gate, I decided to test Susanah's. I'm glad I did! I pulled and pulled and tugged (I took it OFF Susanah first) on that thing and it would not release. I tried pulling it on lightly - nope. I tried pulling it quickly - nope. We will be purchasing a new collar. |
If it's a break away collar it will be labeld as that on the package but I didn't think they were all that great to be honest. I checked them out at PetSmart and you have to pull so hard to get them to release...there's no way my 2 little 4 pounders would be able to pull hard enough to release them. However, I looked in the cat collar section and they had them there too...they might not be as hard to release. |
This one was actually labeled "adjustable" and I just assumed. My mistake. From now on I will be readling labels more carefully and testing before I buy! Susanah is just too fearless and active to take any chances. |
I would try the cat section at Pet Smart. I bought Scamp a really cute break away collar when he was younger in the cat section there and it did break away really easy, you didn't have to pull on it very much at all for it to break away. |
That is a quick-clip collar, not a break away collar. I would hope that the quick-clip collar wouldn't come off! It's not meant to. I use those, rather than a buckle because the buckle is too bulky. If you want a breakaway collar you need to buy a cat collar. |
You might want to try the cat break-away collars next time. They're a lot thinner & easier to pull free. I've seen them in action too - one of my kitty clients got his tags stuck in a floor vent and got right out of it. for testing it! |
