(Repost) What do you do? Hello all. I just wanted to know...if we are walking our furbabies and/or they are in out arms and we get attacked by dog that is obvious trying to kill or baby...what do you do? We all know we would defend our baby to the fullest even death for some of us. I heard Mase (spell check me someone ) is like Binaca to dogs. What type of defense weapon would be appropriate for dogs like (i.e pitbulls) and where can you buy these items so you would always have them in a case like this besides a stick? I have no idea what to do - this is a great question. I think about this all the time. Even if there are things that you are supposed to do (poke him in the eyes, etc), I don't know how I would react in a real situation! I have no idea and it is scary to think about... |
I have heard also that regular mace (sp?) doesnt work in this situation, so you have to get a special type of mace that is made especially for bears. Hikers carry it... I think you would be able to get it online or at a sporting goods store! |
I had an experience with my cocker and a chow... and all I thought of as I RAN to intercept the chow was Dogacide.....I really knew I was going to jump on it's back and do a choke hold till I knew Tessa was safe... or he went limp - As I ran - I got to plan... I'm sorry to say that - but if a dog is roaming free and attacking - then those are consequences...I'd hate to kill or hurt any dog - but for my girls - yes I would. If I were HOLDING or walking my yorkies - (which I don't in my neighborhood) then... I would be kicking for the throat and going for the eyes - and I KNOW would all be reaction - no thinking... This is actually a REALLY GOOD post - you have me thinking now... |
the problem is that some dogs when they decide to attack there is literally nothing you can do to stop it. Esp if they are big dogs. The reason I asy this is because I had two dobermans when Nove the older one was nearing the end of her life she would intensionally provoke fights. These fights would be so bad I could not get them apart, I actully had to call my husband home from work (a 30 min drive) to help me on one ocassion. I had tried hitting them on the snout, water, mace etc, and nothing worked excet brute strength. Some dogs once they bite their jaws will lock, and then what? I think this is a good question and I would love to see some ideas come from this. Also what happens if I am protecting my dog and myself, can I kill the dog if needed? I only ask this because I have seen dogs litterally not stop until someone does die. Please dont get me wrong, but my yorkie is like my child, and if a dog attacked any one of them would be feroucous with the dog that tried it. |
The only time i ever personally expierinced this was when my dog rusty got attacked. i couldn't think straight i wasn't able to do anything but scream. I think if it haddent been for a nice man my dog wouldn't be here today. i now can think of everything i could have done. its a lot different when its actually happening then when you think about it. |
Bump :D (just doing what everybody else does to get their post to the top) |

There has to be some place on a dog that would render them weak or useless for attacking without getting an arm ripped off like I was ready to do that day.... My hubby laughed so hard at me when I made it back to the house ...he said my eyes were BUGGED out of my head....all I remember doing is shaking and kissing Tessa...then I wanted to kick HIM for not running out there to help me ! lol...how mean is that ? (don't worry - I don't kick) :D |
What happened with your Tessa? Curious to know how you got of your situation. |
I am relieved to say that I have yet to be in such a situation. Knowing that I cannot say "what I would do", but I do know what I feel I would need to do or have to do to provide protection. :aimeeyork |
I don't know what I'd do! This really scares me. I have thought about this a few times since getting Keeley. Even when we are just outside I wonder what i'd do (or he'd do) if a big dog came up to us and wasn't friendly. |
This is a great question. I think i will freeze. Im such a scary cat.I or anyone I know have never being attacked by a dog. I will love to know what I have to do in a circunstances like this so I can be prepare. |

I played the whole thing in my head as I ran - She was in one yard - he was in the next .....She saw him at the last minute racing toward her and FLEW back to the garage crying for her mama... All I remember is saying over and over - I gotta tackle him ...I gotta kill him - She was REALLY lucky I was there screaming...she isn't called the Clueless Cocker for nothing ! |
just a little advice-I know at a time like that you aren't thinking, honestly I am not sure what I would do. I can tell you running & screaming is going to make a dog chase you more. They chase because they have a prey drive-when chasing prey the prey run & squeel or scream building the dog up to chase more. The faster the prey runs, the louder it screams the more the dog wants at it. |
I carry mace and am always alert of my surroundings. Bella wears a harness and is always on leash when we walk outside, if ever there is a big dog walking by us, I just simply pick her up. I don't think its fair to other owners as well for someone to automatically act prejudicial towards their dog for being a "big" dog. Its their walk way as much as it is mine. |
