I need my head examined So I got this wild hair and decided I wanted to MAKE Susanah a couple of dresses. I got the pattern. I read the stuff on the back and got all the material, thread, and whatchadohickey thingies that it said to get. I got some really pretty fabric and even found some on sale to make a blanket with. So WHY do I need my head examined you ask? Well, that's simple. I can't sew. At all. I don't own a sewing machine, wouldn't know how to even turn one on if I did. I can barely thread a needle. Once I get it threaded (takes about 20 minutes and a lot of cussing) I CAN sew on a button, but that's it. *sigh* I guess I just thought it would give me something to do during the day and I kind of thought to myself, "How hard can it really be?" Then I opened the pattern. I think I'll stick to buying her clothes. |
LOL I think those patterns are hard to follow. I made up my own patterns. just look at the clothes that you have and make a pattern from that. But if you don't own a sewing machine then you do have a bit of a problem. WHAT WERE YOU THINKING??>? |
awwwwwww I know just how you feel. Sewing is not something I'm good at. I can sew enough to make repairs on clothes or sew buttons on, and that's it. To read a pattern and understand it........that's just way to much for my wee little brain. I have a sewing machine, and it sits in my closet. I really should get it out and play around. Have you tried crocheting? That's something I enjoy doing alot, and I found that pretty easy to learn. Give the pattern a try....maybe find a friend or relative who can help you out a bit with it, just to get you started? |
Oh hun! I feel your pain. Those patterns are sooo confusing for those of us who are beginners. Maybe someone else has some good suggestions here, but I found a simple pattern online. I will see if I can find it again. Don't give up! Make the blanket at least and learn how to use the machine a little. A little pillow will help boost your confidence. Start slowly, but don't give up. Hugs! |
Maybe you could borrow a machine to try it out? |
My mom has a sewing machine and I know she wouldn't have a problem with me using it. She is really sick (she has non-alcohol related liver disease and is on a liver transplant list) so I know she doesn't feel like giving me lessons though. I honestly thought it wouldn't be that hard to make a little dress. Then it starts talking about "gathering" the material and all these kinds of stitches. I thought there was only one kind of stitch - the kind that held it together. I didn't know it mattered if it was straight or crooked or ziggy zaggy. Apparently it does. Wow. It's just like that cross stitch stuff. They take something that looks so simple and give you all these directions that make it so friggin' complicated! |
Try the pattern on this site. It might be easier for you. http://www.sewing.circleofcrafters.c...sspattern.html |
That site also has some great beginner tips. Just have fun! She won't care if the seam is straight or if it's not perfect. She'll just love you no matter what! :) |
I believe they have "Sewing for Dummy" patterns (they aren't for dummies - but for beginners). I believe they have some dog patterns. This may be a place to start. |
