loves his walks but hates putting on his leash hi all, maybe some one else has has this problem..Howie is 7 mos no, loves his walks, but bites and nips, not hard but frustrating , while trying to get his leash on..i have the halter type which his front legs go thru.it's soft, should be for 72.00 dollars, this is not his first, the first was when he was small it was leather front leg halter, this one is bigger in size as he grew and is not tight, no pitching anywhere..but he's always been like that..we live in city and he loves his 10 min walk to the ocean to play in the waves..but what a little hassle to get this thing on...any suggestions?? is this common? Thanks folks and so sorry for the l-o-n-g...post.. Susan16/Howie:cool: |
put it on when your not going for walks to get him used to it. If you have taught him sit, make sure u make him sit and stay... offer him a treat if he sits nice... next maybe touch the area were u hook the leash to and treat him when he is calm and lets you touch it. do that a few times and then ease into actually hooking it up and praising him and maybe treating him as well. Let him know that you are in charge and that is the way he needs to be if he wants to go one walks... thas just a suggestion. |
Jake used to hate his leash too, so I started putting it on him around the house to get him used to it. He soon learned that he couldn't go outside without it, so when I say "wanna go bye bye?", he gets excited and gets up on my lap to get his leash on. |
Molly hates her harness too. She bucks and snorts like a little bull. It's funny unless I'm in a hurry. Getting her to sit, giving a cheerio, then putting it on and getting another cheerio helps a little. Good luck! Carla |

At seven months your little Howie is still a silly pup. It sounds like he is full of exuberance and life and joy and just hasn't learned how to contain it yet. It would be good to teach Howie a verbal command to stand/stay. Once he fully learns that then you can start working with him to stand/stay while you are putting the harness on. GOOD LUCK and enjoy your walks with your sweet little one. |
I have the same problem with Kiwi-she hates putting her harness on but once we get going she enjoys the walk. |
