Calling all yorkie dress/outfit makers I have only made a pillow in home ec in the 7th grade. Since then I have also never touched a sewing machine. I was thinking about taking up making outfits for my yorkies. How difficult do you think this would be for me. I do have two coworkers whom are older have have made just about everthing. They are experts on the sewing machine and quilting. I am sure I could get some assistance from them. Just curious how hard it would be for me to tackle this project without knowing anything about sewing. |
Well, how long ago was 7th grade? JK I always think a person can do whatever they set their mind to as long as they have the physical and mental capability. Therefore - go buy some fabric and get busy!;) You'll need a machine - doesn't have to be the best for now. If you like it and want to do other things, you can invest in something nice later and donate or sell the first one. Fabric stores have dog clothing patterns in the craft section of the pattern books. Those can get you going and the instructions are pretty easy to follow. Just take your time, go slowly and be patient with yourself. You can do it! And use those resources at work. They'll be happy to help you. |
I am teaching myself also, and it's been a lot of fun! Just keep trying. I make mistakes, but I learn from them. Everyone on here has been helpful when I had questions. Just try it! Some of the patterns can get expensive, so I search for sales or look at dog clothing in stores and try to make my own. Do a search for dog patterns on the web. There are some free ones out there. Search the sales at fabric places and ask about the remnant section. I have found that I can pick up enough for a little outfit for a couple of bucks. Good luck and have fun! :) |
It is fun to sew. You should start with something simple like a doggie bandana and practice getting use to your machine. It is great you have sewing friends that you can bounce ideas off. I use the paper grocery bags to make patterns before cutting the fabric out. Good luck and have fun. |
I also want to make dresses. I just got a machine that my mom's friend gave away :D I'm excited!!! My mom used to make clothes for her barbies when she was little so i hope she can teach me some |
Heather - start with some scrap fabric and just start sewing. You'll soon find what works and what doesn't and how to size your babies accordingly. It's not too difficult to come up with something you will like and will look fabulous!!! There are some patterns available out there, but I've always found it is easier to design my own. I have a great website for "D" rings and heavy duty velcro that is much less expensive than the stores and far superior quality too. Let me know if you'd like that info once you get on a roll. Happy sewing!!!!! |
