my question of the year
 
Ok i been searching on this board for a few weeks for the answer. I didn't wanna open a thread if there was one already...

Anyway, how do i manage my boys hair; when he lifts his leg to pee he goes a little on his hair each time. I bathe him once a week. I have no desire to cut his hair, and have trimmed it an inch but of course that was not enough to get the hair out of the way for him to urinate without soiling his coat.

what do u recommend? i can imagine ways to combat this however,you guys usually come up with some cool and simple solutions to difficult problems.

what part of his hair is he peeing on? Does he hit his skirt or his front leg or his belly hair?

doesn't hot his belly hair and rarely does it hit the back of his front legs.. Mostly his skirt i guess. The hair that hangs down on the side right in front of his back legs. You would think that lifting his leg up would insure he would miss his own hair. Also do girl Yorkies with long coats also have this problem?

hmm, i thought it would be the skirt. I don't' exactly know how to combat this without trimming the hair. Hopefully others here with dogs in full coat will be able to help you in a way that doesn't involve trimming or wrapping the hair. For girls its different, trimming the immediate area prevents the hair from getting wet.

I'm not sure about boys, but I have a girl and usually what I do is give here what they call a sanitary or hygienic cut. I (or the groomer) shaves the hair all along her belly and privates. We also shave the butt so the feces doesn't stain her coat when she's going nor while she pees. Maybe if there is a little hair at the end of this "peeper", it cause the urine to kind of trickle in a different direction. Just a suggestion. I was also concerned about cutting the hair, but you really cannot see it at all. Hope you find a solution.

I read, that not trimming the hair at the end of the penis will help to direct the urine downward. not sure if they knew what they were talking about, just thought I'd pass that along

I have been told the same thing. I would think it would work unless yours is a bigger yorkie with a powerful stream...

You'll probably have to use a washcloth to wipe down the soiled hair once or twice day day to keep that area clean

Well I trim that hair on him... so that was interesting to read

Yeah I been washing him down with a wash cloth. and i think i will just throw his hair up in a lil ponytail holder on each side right before he goes pee pee. I dunno..

I do know for sure i don't wanna cut his hair cause it was almost to the ground last time i cut it. and that was the beginning of last month. I think i cut it like an inch and 1/2. Because of my line of work it allows me to be able to take time out and pay attention to his hair. I really don't wanna cut it :( and even if i was to cut it i still have a style that has
a nice skirt.. I found this picture below on a website.

I thought for sure someone else may have had this problem. Maybe I am not doing something right because I cut his hair myself??????

I don't think you have to cut his hair. Even females with long hair seem to get a little pee on the long hair on their butts when they go. Someone else was having this issue with their female and just used wet wipes to clean that hair after potty time. the ponytail idea before you take him to potty is worth a try. That might work.

Thank you very much. I will just keep wiping him down after he goes pee pee and the pony tail thing.

Try putting his side coat up in those little scrunchies.....It's what I use to keep them clean before show time. One on each side then tie the 2 together up on top.


There is also a product called Show Off by Chris Christensen. It's a self Rinse that doesn't need to be rinsed off, Spray on coat whereever it's dirty and brush as you dry.

Show Off is wonderful, other self rinses leave the coat stiff, this doesn't. I use it on my mother's that have just had puppies to keep them fresh until it's safe to bathe them
