How will my first Yorkie react to a new pup? Yesterday my husband and I went back to our breeder for a visit where we got Cookie from. We took Cookie with us but she wasn't too thrilled. I guess it was the combination of unfamiliar territory (Cookie's 10months old) and all of the other dogs there. Cookie is usually very friendly with my brother's multipoo but yesterday she just curled up in a ball in my husband's lap. We went to the breeder to visit and see which dogs she is breeding because we want another puppy. When we got home yesterday, Cookie would not look at me and wouldn't even sit in the same room with me  She followed my husband around all day yesterday after we got home. My husband left for an hour or two and Cookie waited by the front window until he got home. My question is, Is this normal behavior from a Yorkie? Will another Yorkie pup in the house make her jealous? My husband and I really would like another Yorkie in the house for Cookie to play with but we feel like we're "cheating" on Cookie. Has anyone else experienced this? What should we do? |
She definetly is senstive and is punishing you. I would be shocked though if she didn't come around to a new pup (probably take a little less than a week). Be prepared to feel very guilty at first for loving a second puppy when Cookie would probably rather snap her neck straining to turn it as far away from the new puppy as she can get it without moving her body off of your lap (yes, that is from experience). It will all work out, you know the Yorkie attitude, "You MUST be mistaken in THINKING that you don't like ME!" Your new pup won't give up, and your first one WILL give in! LOL |
It almost sound like your yorkie is throwing a tantrum. I heard dogs don't but I swear that my yorkie has thrown tantrums before too . And I do think they can get jealous but there are thing and rules to follow that will make a new addition transition more easily. Example: Good introduction into the household. Not forcing old dog to play with new dog, etc... |
I was so afraid that Biddy would be jealous when we got Tucker, but it went much smoother than I expected. I think the important thing is to make sure that you give lots of love and attention to Cookie when you get another puppy. Yorkies associate a lot, so it you give her lots of praise when the puppy is around she will associate the puppy with getting praised. It has a lot to do with their personalities too, so make sure that Cookie is involved in picking out the new pup! |
4 Attachment(s) My male had been an only child and we brought Bunny home when he was 11 months... the first two weeks were miserable!!! Tino is extremely sensitive and he just acted like I had ruined his life and would not even let the puppy touch him! I was sick about it, then finally one day I realized that I was reinforcing his behavior, but babying him, so I got the "Deal with it! She's staying!" attitude and I would say within a few days, he was fine! They are inseparable! Having two was the best decision! |
i think ! that its always better to get a new dog when your first dog is still young at least a year old. Because i got pixie when my first dog was 6 years old and she is to old to deal with her. Plus i felt bad about how depressed she was. she would just stay in my moms room because pixie was so crazy she didnt want to be near her. |
I wish I could say that my other baby has come around to love our new puppy but that absolutly is not the case still. I did everything exactly like Tara and it didnt work for my Rio yet. It has been 2 months and we are still in the "when will she be leaving stage" I am now back to doting on my boy and I have even been reduced to begging a couple of times because he is so mad at me too. The worst part is that with all his moping and trying to eat all the pups food he has gained at least 3 lbs!!!!! I hope someone on here will come up with something new so I can feel better for my boy:( On a positive note, I have heard every one elses stories and their dogs all love each other:) |

Thank you! Thank you so much for all your input. You've talked me back into another one :D I'm sending my deposit in tomorrow! At least now I know what to expect with her. I have a feeling she'll take quite a while to warm up. We'll see. I will keep you updated. The puppies are supposed to be born this coming weekend. She's having 2 so we're not sure if they're males or females. Thanks again! |
Congrats! I am sooo happy for you! There are a ton of views on mising genders, but I love having one of each! They have such different personalities and compliment each other in the best ways! My male is the big lover and my little girl in very independent! Let us know what you decide! |
The puppies have arrived! Just wanted to share the wonderful new of the birth of the new puppies. Laci (the mommy) gave birth to 1 boy and 1 girl on Monday :D . She had to have a C-section but she recovered quickly and is doing great. Now we have to decide which one to bring into our home. I'm so excited :p . Thanks for all your support. I will post any pictures I get from the breeder ASAP! I guess I should start thinking about boy and girl names. |
