Why do some dogs bark excessively? I am just wondering because I have a friend that has a yorkie and he barks ALL the time, I mean at everyone. And they don't give him that much attention so I'm wondering do dogs that bark a lot only do it cause they want attention? I don't know since none of my dogs bark at all unless the door rings and unless they want something, and they only bark like twice. I taught Teddy at a young age not to bark, but he really never did. London is not a barker and neither is Sophia, except if the door rings. There are neighbors of mine that have chihuahuas that bark at Everything!Anyone know? |
Mine will bark when they see someone outside or another animal outside or when the doorbell rings They bark like crazy when I come home from work until I have stopped and picked upo each one and given it kisses. Mine get alot of attention so I dont think that is the reason. I think if I only had 1 or 2 they wouldnt bark but if one starts to bark then they all think they need to join in. All except Kiley and she doesnt bark ever. |

There are probably as many reasons why dogs bark as there are dogs. Okay, maybe not that many, but there are lots of reasons. The biggest has to do with the dog's personality. Some dogs just bark (and bark and bark and bark). Others don't bark so much. It's like people and talking - some of us are quiet and some talk nonstop. Many dogs bark from boredom. Many dogs feel the need to constantly alert their owners to danger. Some dogs are anxious or are over-stimulated. Some dogs bark because they are poorly socialized. Some breeds bark more than others. Yorkies happen to be one of those breeds that tend to bark; Huskies rarely ever bark. Some dogs respond better to anti-bark training than do others. For many (if not most) dogs, barking is self-reinforcing. Barking just plain feels good. |

I've got a barker, we tried the "no bark" command as soon as he discovered his vocal chords, still doesn't work, he barks at everything all the time, and gets tons of attention, once we get home from work at night he's pretty much got our attention, and we include him in on everything, even chores, he picks up his own toys, he is very socialized with people, dogs and even my new nephew, very happy and very content, easy to train. He just barks, and even though it annoys us we love him, he's just a barker, i think it's just his personality! |

Mojo isn't a barker....until the big dogs bark at something outside or if someone comes. We softly tell him to shhhhsh and repeat if needed. That is the only time he barks. Lily on the other hand....oh my goodness, does this girl bark. But I know when we went to pick her up, she was non-stop barking!! Until she finally realized that we were going to be there for awhile. She still barks...finally stopped barking at my DH everytime he walks in. We are working with her. I think in her other home, she had the run of the place with very little discipline and training, so we are working on that..... |

I wish Natalie barked, instead she's a squealer!! It's ear piercing and I hate it. She does it if she is excited to see someone outside or if I walk into the garage or the other room without her. I love her so much but this is really annoying. I got a Maltese puppy a few weeks ago and she is the barker and very full of herself. She gets plenty of attention but wants to be sure she isn't missed so she barks to get your attention or when she and Natalie are playing. I have a new trainer coming Tuesday night so maybe he will give me some advice. I'll share if he has any great ideas. |
