Yorkies and Airplanes...Any Suggestions/helpful tips?
 
Hi again,
So Busters first trip is coming up in about 2 weeks....we're traveling from NY to FL about a 2 hour flight...Anyone have any suggestions or helpful tips to share to make it a smooth flight? (For the both of us) Thanks! :) :)

Mine sleep in the carrier all the way, I offer a bit if chicken at take off so they will swallow and clear their ears.....I get a new chew toy or bone for them..but mine just sleep.

Buster always freaks out whenever I put him in the carrier...the last time he actually threw up :(

yea, Daisy does that from time to time..esp when we go on car rides. :( I don't have any advice on flying with them...I hope you get some good ones so I can get a sense of what to do when I do. :)

I went to pick up Sophia yesterday and she came back on the plane with me. She was a little nervous at first so I would ask the vet if there is anything you can give him to calm him down. I know that there is a stress reliever that they sell. Also take some treats with you and water in case he gets thirsty. Also take a peepee pad or a diaper. ;)

I think you need a health certificate from your vet signed within 10 days of the flight. Check with the airline. I always fly Delta because they don't have any planes too small for the dog carrier to go in the cabin. I have flown with my Bichon, Lacy, several times. She is very calm and travels well. I always take a few oyster crackers and a bottle of water. You shouldn't need to give your little one anything on a two-hour flight. The less you give him, the better off he will be as far as being sick and vomiting. The stewardess usually brings me a cup of ice for Lacy and I give her a few pieces. Don't encourage eating or drinking. If it's an early morning flight, don't give him food or water before you leave. Let the little one sleep if he will. By the way, wear something pretty. You will get a lot of attention traveling with a little cutie. Have a good flight!

Since you're traveling in 2 weeks, use the time before the trip to let Buster get used to the carrier. Have the carrier built and available for exploration by Buster. If he won't even go in on his own, put a comfy towel in there and encourage him to go in by putting treats in there. Then let him come and go in it as he wants. The more he sees and gets used to it, the less traumatic it will be for him.

My Eury uses her carrier as her sleep area in her x-pen. So she loves it and when we go on trips knows that her carrier is a good place not a scary one. I hope this helps. Good luck!

Let the pup get used to the carrier. I always put in a chewbone and a mat/pad that they sleep on at home. Nutrical too.l

BTW, YT now has an entire section on Traveling with your Yorkie, where there are some really helpful threads.
