Why are yorkies so expensive ? Question ....Why are yorkies so expensive when other breeds go for $300 to $500? People are paying 1000 on up for yorkies they cant breed or show....why are they sold for such high price? |
I have no idea. But now that I have Holly, she was worth every single penny. And I am not breeding or showing. |
Yorkies are a small breed and in high demand. They have very small litters (usually 2-4) opposed to say a lab that has 10 puppies. Smaller litters means less puppies means more per puppy. Plus a higher price per puppy hopefully deters a lot of people that don't have the money to spend on higher vet bills, grooming costs, etc. that comes with owning a yorkie as opposed to a larger, stronger breed of dog |
I look at it as an investment in my emotional health and couldn't get any mental health professional to treat me daily for the next 15 years for $1500:) Just kidding (sort of) but how many people spend $1000 a year at Starbucks? or just name your vice, smoking, drinking, McDonald's - you just have to decide what is important to you |

Because they are the #2 most popular dog in the country. Because more and more people are wanting apartment size dogs. Because you can have 7, 5# yorkies and not have as much dog poop as one lab. When you think of the cost of feeding a big dog, and the cost of feeding a yorkie, a yorkie turns out to be a bargain in the long run. Because they are just so darn CUTE. And as the others have said, they are affordable if you just sacrifice a bit for them, and darn well worth it. |

If you think about it say you paid $1500 for your yorkie and had it for 15 years. That is ONLY $100 a year for the best companion you'll ever have! Even if you pay $2000 and have it for only 10 years that is still only $200 a year... |
Why do BMW's cost more than Chevy's? :D Here's the thing - for a GOOD breeder, Yorkies cost a lot to show, groom, etc. Then that dog only has 2-4 puppies and the cost of those puppies has to try to make up for the vet bills and the costs of showing the dog. That sets the bar pretty high (generally in the $800-1500 range). But, then your neighbor could let their Yorkie have puppies even if they didn't show it, and then sell those puppies for $1000 because that's the going rate for Yorkies. And people will pay it, because Yorkies are popular. People would pay $1000+ for a show quality lab, but not for a neighbor's lab puppy! But some reason, people will pay the $1000 for the Yorkie? And that neighbors puppy is at least in better shape than the pet store puppy that people will also pay $1000 for :mad: :mad: :mad: I can't explain that last part, except that people are not informed about puppy mills. Anyway, I guess my point is that some Yorkies *should* cost $1000+ You need to ask questions and meet the breeder, the parents, etc. to determine that. |
I bet if you post this in the "Breeder" section, you will find out exactly why yorkies are so expensive. Since I got Jake, I have stayed in touch with and become good friends with his breeder. I see how much time and work she puts into breeding. I'm not a breeder, nor do I ever intend on breeding, but if it's done right, it can be very expensive and time consuming and health should always be number one, in my opinion. |

I personally feel that the high cost of yorkies allows breeders to be more discriminating when finding the right home for them. Not just any Joe Blow can walk in and drop $800-$2000 in a breeders hand and say give me a puppy....BUT Breeders have the option to take the time to carefully choose the new homes for their puppies and I do believe that most of the breeders here, myself included, screen for new homes VERY carefully and are VERY choosy when it comes to new families for puppies they have worked hard to bring into this world. And I have to concur with SJK, health is VERY important and I think so is temperment. |
