Borax miracle Our carpet is 5 yrs old and we planned to replace it-not in great condition from previous owners. But, since we adopted Kiwi last year it is worse. We finally bought a carpet cleaner for our own use. It helped. But the spots would come back up. (We have bought and tried almost every type of cleaner that exist) Now Kiwi is 1 year old and is doing better but still has accidents upstairs. A friend told me to wet the urine spot and pour Borax on it-let it sit a day or two until it is hard and lift the clump up. This has been wonderful-the hard clump literally turns yellow in spots where it has soaked up the urine and you can smell it. I then spray a vinegar and water mixture on it. I have had to do some spots twice. But she said if you start off with this the spots will not come back-so far it looks good. When Kiwi is finally trained-we will replace the carpet or put down hardwood floors upstairs. But for now . . . . PS-any ideas on how to train a Yorkie to ask out when she is upstairs? She ask out when she is downstairs but upstairs, if the moment hits her she squats.:Pawprint: |
Thanks......I'm deff. going to try it.....I've tried so many things on my carpet but so far nothing has worked, I've tried... vinegar mixed 50/50 w/ water, straight vinegar, Nature's Miracle, Bissell Carpet cleaner for pet urine, & Resolve & it's still there!..so I've got nothing to lose...:) |
maybe when she is upstairs you could try the bell thing? if you can have her hit the bell to tell you downstairs, you could maybe get it to work when she's upstairs, too. ps--does the borax discolor your carpet? |
Borax We have a cream colored berber carpet and it did not discolor it. But, I would do a test run to be sure. I was so desperate I just poured the stuff on and luckily it did not leave any discoloration. |
we have the same problem. the stains keep reappearing. i will try this. thanks for the tip |
ladies!!! hey what does borax look like, where do you get it, how much does it cost?? thanks |
Does the Borax work on old stains? I usually use Spot Shot on stains on my carpet, but I'm not sure it's for pet stains. Once when I had my carpets professionally cleaned they told me not to use Resolve because it leaves a residue on the carpet that dirt sticks to. They recommended Spot Shot, it works well on stains that my kids get on the carpet. I think Borax is in the laundry section at the store. |

I found a box of Borax on the bottom shelf on the laundry soap aisle at Wal-Mart. We have a pee pad upstairs in the bathroom and Mojo and Lily both seem to know that it is there for them to use. |
Thank you! |
We were using ChemDry professional cleaners and their spot remover-they also told us not to us over the counter cleaners like Resolve because of the soap residue. But even when they clean our carpets-the spots would reaapear. That is why we ended up getting our own steam cleaner-but still just temporarily cleaned. Thus, the Borax try. I have been using it on fresh and old spots-so far only a few reappeared and I redid them with Borax again. It seems to be working. I am doing some more spots right now. Believe me there are many more spots to do-it is endless. I have only been doing this for a few months so I can't tell you anything beyond that You find it in the laundry section-it is a fine powder in a box like regular laundry detergent-the box has many other listings for use on it-The box says 20 Mule Team Borax and is green and yellow. My husband said it was around 3-4.00 $ Thanks for bell idea |
I got my Borax today and am anxious to try this. What do you do to keep your baby out of the borax while it is drying? Also, do you work the borax in with a brush or something or just sprinkle it on top? I was thinking of putting a towel or pee pad over the area while it dries. I have a rather large area to treat. |
I sprinkle a mound on the spot. At first we covered them but then we have found that Kiwi does not bother them so we leave them uncovered. She just sniffed it and walked away-maybe because of the urine smell. The girl who told me about it said you lay a towel over it. |
I treated a big area of the carpet last night. I just wet the carpet and sprinkled the borax on top. Gracie immediately tried to eat some. I covered the area with towels. This morning it is still wet, but the borax is now yellow! YES! |
I've aslo heard it kills fleas in rugs as well. it's was on the homesteadingtoday board I hang out at. they swear the stuff removes the stains and kills fleas and flea eggs. ty |
I have read that Borax is very toxic and animals should not be allowed in the room when you use it. I had never heard that it removes stains but people swear it does kill fleas. I bought a box of it a few moths ago but I have been afraid to use it. I have a lot of cats and 3 dogs in the house. It would be too hard to treat the carpet and keep them out of the room. |

Borax----it's an inexpensive wonder cleaning aide....... |
Just got a box of borax today so going to give it a try, Thanks for the tip !!!! |
Make sure you wait until the mound is hard before you scoop it up- |
Does it work on older stains? I told my husband and he wants to try it. |
Right now I am treating some older stains for the 2nd time-I put it down 2 days ago-it is now hard and again there is yellow coloring so it obviously picked up more urine. I will see if 2 treatments are enough after this. It truly is amazing to see the yellow mound and u can smell the urine in it-I;m keeping my fingers crossed this will at least clean up the major spots. We just had our closet redone this weekend and when we emptied it out for the contractors we found little pp spots where our shoes were-I had to laugh so that is the next room and they look old. She is such a stinker:( |
I am also treating some old stains for the 2nd time and am getting results. |
How wet do you need to get the spot before you put the Borax on? Like do you spritz it with a spray bottle or just POUR water right on the spot? I'm going to try this. |

Okay. Thanks. I have quite a lot of spots that need this. |
I've never used borax to clean before... I've used it in tons of science expiriments though! The best is making putty. Does it work on non-urine stains too? I have an atrocious carpet in my bedroom... -O |

It sounds like this really works well I just want to make sure that it isn't going to discolor the carpet. We have cream colored berber and it has some stains on it. Thanks |
It is a miracle. Works better than any of the thousand other products I have tried. Thanks for the information. Everyone with pee spots should do this. |
