My Anxiety is Affecting the Monkeys Our trainer came over tonight because I've been having some trouble walking Simon. Simon is my happy go lucky little guy but the past few weeks he's been nipping at other dogs and the other day nipped at the mailman. I was so worried about him and it turns out it's all about me!!!! The trainer watched me walk Simon and told me he could see how stiff and anxious I seemed to be in my nonverbals and that Simon was picking up on it. It all makes sense, I do get nervous with other dogs and people around him. I have to learn to relax and be calm. Easier said than done though. I asked the trainer if some wine would help me :) Our next meeting is next Thursday and we are taking Simon to an outdoor mall around other people and dogs. |
Well, In my opinion the wine can never hurt!!!!But then your walk may go wrong for other reasons!!! I hope everything gets better for both you and your monkey!!! Stress and anxiety have such an effect on our bodies and minds. Good luck with everything,, Hang in there, girl!!! |
its amazing how these little guys can pick up on things we don't even know we're doing. I'm sorry you're having some problems with Simon, but glad that you got a trainer to help you figure out what was going wrong. When walking morgan i get alittle nervous too sometimes when another dog is walking their owner. If the dog is pulling way ahead of the owner and the owner looks like he's in no control i simply change directions or cross the street. If the owner looks like he knows what he's doing then i keep morgan in check and calmly keep on walking straight ahead. Sometimes the other person will just keep on walking which is fine with us and other times they start making conversation within 10 feet of us. In this case i'll let the dogs meet and sniff but i'll only stick around for a minute or two (unless the owner is a hot guy then we stick around longer hehehe hey a single girls gotta work it *snort* ), then continue on our walk. Good luck with Simon next Thursday. Hope it goes well and your walks improve edit: wine also helps !! |
Good luck at the outdoor mall. Let us know how it goes. |
oh i have the same problem... well HAD... we went to petsmart for classes and Layla was SO snippy at this one dog that pissed her off... i was SO uptight the next time we went she snipped at them all... i was a crying mess.. but the trainer said she can feel it in me.. and thinks she has to protect me... now i praise her when she is good and i pet the dog, i act calm, (well i pretend.. ) even though i'm still anxious that she will snip, she can tell that i have calmed down.. it has made a world of difference! Good luck with mr. simon! |
LOL looks like Little Simon Sassy Pants is Simon SMARTY Pants - he's picked up on your feelings and he's playing little protecter - GOOD luck with your new walk - so...are you going to Strut your stuff now Mom ?? I can see it now - Kim walking the Model Walk when out with The Monkeys - that outta relax him ...he'll end up high stepping right along with you :D |
hey, keep us posted on how the trainer works out. I live in Rotterdam and Zoe is only 5 months old but would like to know some good local trainers if the need arises. I did have a trainer over for my collie and he was really good but the session was $175 and I couldn't afford that every week or even every month! Good luck with Simon. It's amazing how dogs pick up on things. My sister developed a phobia after one of those big storms hit up in Saratoga. Trees were uprooted in her yard and ruined her fence and deck. Luckily, noone was hurt but after that she would get really nervous when a storm was coming. Guess what her golden lab does when she hears a storm coming - she totally freaks as well. |
Bless his heart - he's trying to protect you. You need to let him know that you are fine and he can go back to enjoying his walk. |
it's amazing how they pick up on our moods.....I'm sure with some help from the trainer he'll be right back to his "old happy go lucky" self! |
Good luck with Simon...relax...enjoy the scenery!!! |

Like Dr. Phil says - not in so many words - fake it until it becomes real. Put your shoulders back, head high, you're the Queen. Pay absolutely no attention to his needs (except when he needs to pee, etc.). It's all about you and your needs on your walk. If he acts up, correct him however you do it, and then keep on going. This is all so much easier with that glass of wine! |
Good luck with the training session with little Simon. Keep us posted! |
