dog sitting for 3 weeks .... help! Oky, I have to dog sit my parents' yorkie... and he's a beautiful little guy and fun to play with, BUT IN SMALL DOSES ... you know the kind of dog right, really needy, hyper all the time, will try to make him the dominant one compared to kikko (in all senses like food, toys, and .. yes he even tries to hump kikko!) kikko gets along with him tho, kikko just lets baloo be the dominant one. but I swear baloo has ADD. I am the one who will be in trouble. Kikko is a pretty calm and independent dog, so i can handle him. but iunno how i am gonna handle baloo .. i've never dog sit him more than 1 week. It has been a week now, and i'm getting scared. i tried to do a training session with him, since i do a session with kikko every night. IT WAS HORRIBLE! When I said sit, he'd do the popcorn butt, jump all over me and kikko for the treat, bark at kikko and at me, etc .... iunno what i am going to do for 3 more weeks ... :( i know this sounds horrible, but i miss kikko and me time! and I treat kikko totally different than how my parents treat baloo, i mean totally spoil kikko and stuff ... my parents love baloo and stuff too, but they treat him like a dog b/c he is a dog. So when my parents are gone, I treat baloo as I do kikko, which is where i went wrong i think (oh yea, i am living with my parents, so both dogs are around each other all the time, its just that when my parents are home they take care of baloo at night, and kikko and I are off in my room.) Can anyone offer advice on how to maybe calm and deal with him?? Sorry for the long post ... its just wearing me out. lol |
Take him for long long walks of play fetch wear him out! surely he will sleep then! |
you need to walk him as much as you can, wear him out..then he might not be so hyper:) |
I think Baloo needs to go to Doggie Daycare a few days a week while they are gone. Then he will just sleep. :) It works, really! |
Walks and a game of fetch everyday keep Lucy managable later in the evening. Don't get me wrong, I love her energy, but when it's time to settle in the evening if I don't wear her out she stays in action mode... Good luck:) |
great ideas everyone ... yea baloo and kikko play with each other FOR HOURS ... omg its like a race, quite funny actually. baloo will chase kikko around and around the house, and kikko loves it and just runs and runs away, but is always looking back to make sure he is being chased. If baloo isn't chasin him, kikko will go to him as if saying 'hey, come chase me!'. yesterday was a bit better, I didn't let him sleep with kikko and me because my parents normally let him sleep in his crate. so it was nice b/c he just fell asleep, and I was able to have some quiet time for myself to unwind. and this morning the two dogs just ran around and played until it was time for me to leave for work. Today I put them in their separate x-pens, I will see how that was when I go back home for lunch. I will def try the walk thing AFTER I put on flea and tick protection on him. I had a post in the past where I found a tick on baloo another time I was dog-sitting and totally freaked out. lol. My parents didn't think it necessary to put any tick/flea stuff b/c the dogs are always inside (I however, immediately got some for kikko.) Thanks everyone for the advice! Any other ideas please let me know! |

Teddy can be hyper at times too, i usually just take him on loong walks and he gets tired :) That should do the trick |
thanks for everyone's comment. Its more than him just being hyper..... here's the comparison: kikko attached to me, he follows me everywhere, but as long as i am in the room or he knows where I am he's oky. baloo on the other hand has to be RIGHT next to me, i have to touch him, if i don't touch him he keeps licking my hand. if i'm sitting he will sit on my lap, even if i have a laptop in my lap, he'll sit on the laptop. he'll scratch at my legs and hands so that i touch him. Or he'll bark and KEEP barking if i am playing tug-a-war with kikko or not paying attention to him. when baloo does these things I don't respond. When he barks, i say no one time firmly, if he doesn't stop i put him in time out until he's quiet for at least 5 minutes ... which he does fine with. when he scracthes at my arm i say hey stop it, and don't pet him. i pet him when he's calm, sitting quietly and good. but the second i stop petting him he'll do the scratching and barking again. its getting really annoying ... these are things i've really noticed today b/c i wanted to write back after i've really observed him today ... any thoughts???? |
