diet hi everyone, my yorkie madison refuses to eat any type of dog food. i have tried everything under the sun. i do not mind cooking for her, i am just concerned that she is not getting enough variety. her typical meal consists of chicken, rice, and carrots. occasionally, i will give her steak or ground sirloin (low fat). she also refuses any dog snacks. we will sometimes give her a raw carrot or some natural peanut butter. she also take a multivitamin on a daily basis (nuvet). i have checked out different sights about what is good and what is not, some are contradictive of one another. oh, i forgot to mention, she loves cheese, any kind! is it okay to give her cheese? how about beans, blueberries, cantaloup? tomato sauce? any help would be appreciated. she weighs 5.5 her vet reports that she is in good health and at a perfect weight. thanks for your help!! |
You're doing great w/ her and bravo for homecooking! Cheese is fine in moderation - one thing I do is buy the canned parmesan and sprinkle it on their meat - they LOVE it. What you do need to do when homecooking is use a multi-vit (which you are) and a calcium supplement. I use Solid Gold's Bone Meal for calcium. I found this AMAZING multi vit/mineral that also has probiotics, digestive enzymes (bc those are lost by cooking the meat), and the Omegas - so it covers everything recommended for homecooking. Mine eat home cooked food and kibble. There is a book called Pitcairn's home cooking...I hear thats a good book. And I have heard a lot about Missing link...maybe that will help! |
This is an issue for me as well. Kalina simply does not like dog food and I worry about her eating habits. I have been grinding up the dry dog food with a jar of baby food meat and some cooked meat. This makes enough for several meals. Sometimes I do lean beef with the baby food beef, mixed with the ground dry dog food (Royal Canin) and sometimes I do chicken and chicken baby food. I don't know if she is getting all the nutrients she needs, but I'll ask my doctor about vitamins when we go there next week. Another thing is that she won't eat it unless I hand feed her. If I hand feed her she'll gobble it all up but if I just set down the bowl she'll walk away. |
