New to forums/New Yorkie Owner I've just adopted a standard Yorkshire Terrier over the weekend that was homeless, have been reading up on the breed. A female, who apparently has had pups before. She's very good natured and a wonderfull addition to our family however, because we have no idea what her name is, can't get her to respond to us at all. Anyone have any tips on how to get a slightly older dog to take to a new name? It seems she has a very small attention span, hard to get her attention, one track mind. Any tips to get her to pay a little more attention? Also, any tips to get her to warm up to our other dogs would greatly be appreciated as well. Thanks Karie |
Welcome! Welcome! We are happy to have you here! Congratulations to your new addition!! You will absolutely love her. I would say treat this like a command. Say her name, and when she responds, give her a treat. Over time, she should be able to learn her name. Especially when she is busy doing something, and you say her name, and she stops everything and looks or comes to you, reward her. |

HOw old is she? It may take some time for her to adapt to a new family, but with love and patience I'm sure she'll be comfortable pretty soon. Congratulation on your new yorkie and post pictures soon! |
Congratulations and :welcome4: to you both! Whatever you are calling her, say it all the time. Any command you give her, use her name. Use her name when you greet her. Definitely be patient and reward her when she responds. (Just imagine if you went through life being "George" and then suddenly for no reason that's clear to you people start calling you "Bob.":) ) |
Congrats on your new baby! re you sure she can hear well?? Maybe she is hard of hearing? Jutsthe forst thing that popped in my head....besised that Id say you got some good advice already. Good luck and post some pics!!! |

Hello! Welcome to YT and congratulations on your new doggy :D This forum is very helpful, you'll love it here (like I do ;) ) I agree with calling her name and giving her a treat when she responds. As for warming up to your other dogs, I haven't had much experience with this because I keep my dog at my parent's house separate from my yorkie that lives with me because Bella (my dog at their house), is dog-aggressive :( She loves people, but just doesn't take kindly to other pets anymore. But I did read somewhere that to introduce your new dog to others, take it slow. Let them sniff each other and watch for signs of aggression (low, deep growling, showing of teeth, etc). Maybe you can let them see each other through a gate first. I also read not to pick up any of your other dogs and let them look at the others on the ground that way. Being high above is a sign of dominance and can cause problems. Are any of your other dogs dog-aggressive? If not, then I think introductions would be a lot easier. Best of luck! :) |
New to Yorkie Talk and having a dog! [F]I am the happy owner of the sweetest, most lovable and loyal 18 mth.old Yorkie named Harley. Over the weekend, she was attacked by another mutt dog 3 times her size. The other dog held Harley in her teeth only by Harley's ear and we were able to extract Harley out the "mean mutt's mouth" without breaking skin. But today, Harley's ear is RED and sometimes is a little floppy & sometimes it stands up normally. Is this cause to take Harley to the VET? Can the ear be damaged even if there are no bones in the ear flap and was no blood? I cant afford to run her to the vet for every little thing that comes up! Only to find out that there is nothing wrong or nothing the vet can do. HELP! What is a worried yorkie mom to do??? Thanks for any advice.[/FONT] |

WOW, thanks everyone for the advice and help. We will most likely settle on a name in the next couple days. MY other 2 dogs aren't big ole mean dogs, my oldest is Baby, she's 5 years old, and she is just that, a baby. a little larger than the new addition and my 2nd dog but wouldn't hurt a fly, she imediately tried to start playing with the new addition soon as she entered the home, but the "newbie" for lack of a better name, wasn't receptive at all grouled and snapped at baby. I think it just scared her, too soon ya know. My 2nd dog is a Chihuahua, he's very possesive and jealous, not big enough to hurt anyone or anything but grouls alot, so i do try to keep him from trying to intimidate the Yorkie. The Yorkie will sniff them but she won't allow them to sniff her in return. I'm pretty positive she's not hard of hearing, cause the few time's i've gotten her to come to me on her own she did so hearing me snap my fingers to her. You guys are all great, thanks so much for all the advice and help. I'll put it all to good use. |
HOW Nice of you giving her a home and WELCOME to the site...Yorkies are notorious for being a bit selfish in what they WANT to do and what WE want them to do lol - so be prepared to be wrapped around her little paw. I don't have training tips cause mine trained ME :p ...but I will say Congratulations and good luck to you |
