PLEASE tell me this is a phase I'd say within the last...3-4 months... probably since the new year.. ACTUALLY it was new years... we were in Florida outside using the facilities and someone set off a fire cracker which scared the poop right out of her... and since then she has progressively gotten scared and skiddish about EVERYTHING. Last night Layla was a complete mess with the fireworks, understandable because they are loud. But she hates when i empty the dishwasher, open the freezer (because ONCE something fell out) put pots and pans away, today my mom killed a fly with a fly swatter and she went nuts... she shakes and runs to the door, rings her bell asking to be let out. She is a complete nut and i'd imagine quite filled with anxiety... and it is getting to be too much... every little noise makes her jump... if we are watching a movie and burst out laughing... or draw in a breath like we are surprised... she is upset and goes right to the door... does anyone else have this problem or BETTER YET.... HAD this problem? is it a phase.. i know children go thorugh phases where they are very fearful... does anyone know anything i can do to help her.... any suggestion is welcome :) |
I would be concerned that this is not just a phase and if you don't do something it will just get worse. You might try some desensitization. Can you gate off your kitchen or tether your baby in there? Keep her in the kitchen with you as you unload the dishwasher. Give her treats and play with her. Try and make a game out of it. Maybe stash a toy or two in the dishwasher before you bring her in there, then toss one out at her periodically. Once she is used to that, work on a different noise. Start small and work up. Stash a treat in the freezer just before you open the freezer door. She needs to learn to associate noises with fun things. You might need to find an animal behaviorist to help you. |
I have read/heard NOT to baby them when they act scared, just tell them it's okay, then go about your business as if the offending scary thing was no big deal. Hopefully it's a phase and she'll follow your cue that all is well;) |
When Logan gets scared. It doesn't matter what I say nothing will calm, except sitting down. He will run to me & press himself against my chest. When he does this I concentrate on breathing slowly & keeping my heart rate regular. When he sees that I am unaffected by said noise then he calms down too. However, my dog does the same thing only with smoke. When i'm cooking & the kitchen gets smokie he will run to the door & beg to be let out, if we don't let him out he runs & hides in the bathroom. Nothing we do will convince him it's okay, so we usually just let him out into our 3-season room until he calms down. |

our lab is scared of thunder. she has to be right next to you if it's storming. drives me nuts!! if it is at night, she will leave her bed and lay right next to your side of the bed. (mostly my husband's). if you get up to pee or get some water you trip on her (she's black and quiet!!). she also doesn't like guns or fireworks. most dogs i think are the same with the fireworks. they do emit a high pitched sound which might be annoying to the dog. maybe your puppy has super sensitive hearing? i know it sounds silly, but some people supersensitive senses. |
