Grooming Question Hello everybody. I made a post a while back about this. My baby girl Lillie has issues with tangled hair. It is actually tangled at the roots. I've tried Cowboy Magic and it doesn't work. Does anybody else have any suggestions? If we don't find something we might have to shave her and start again. I really don't want to do that because she's absolutely adorable right now. Shaving her is a last resort. Does anybody have anything they use? Thank you so much. |
If she's matted to the skin, it's going to hurt her too much to brush all that out. You can take her by a groomer and show her to them and ask if they think she can be brushed out. Most groomers only like to dematt a dog if there are a few matts, but won't do it if it's to the skin and all over because it's very painful to the dog. Think how it would feel if your hair was really tangled and you had to brush through it and pull a lot of hair out. A lot of times dogs that are very matted and brushed out come back with some bald-looking places and their skin is red and irritated. So if your dog is very matted, (although I hate the thought of shaving a yorkie), the best thing for you to do is to shave her and start over. You really need to brush a yorkie at least once a day. I would use a brush and then go back over with a stainless steel comb. The comb gets the fine tangles out. I usually brush Lacy at least twice a day. She hardly ever has any tangles Something I wanted to add: If a dog has tangles and matts you ALWAYS want to brush the tangles/matts out before bathing. Getting the tangles wet only makes the matts worse. Anytime a matted dog comes in to be groomed where I work, the dematting always takes place before the bath. And if a matted dog comes in to be shaved, they always shave the matts off first, bath the dog, and then go back over the dog to finish the groom. So always brush out before bathing or you'll make tangles much worse. |
How old is your female? If she is a puppy you may just be dealing with puppy hair which is always so soft and fluffy. Instead of brushing get a comb and gently lift the hair - most the time it will ease the tangle out. If she just has that soft coat you should make sure to use a pin brush daily and get those tangles asap. There is a product professionals use to help ease the tangles. I use DeMatting Spray from Quidruped Shampoo. It sprays on and then I use a high velocity dryer and the tangles actually dry and fly out. It is the BEST product I've ever used however u have to use an HV or it wont work so talk to a groomer - ask about dematting and keeping your baby matt free. Good luck |
She is just over 5 months old. My mother and I have been using a comb. Where do you get the dematting spray? I'd love to try it. Thanks for the advice! |
www.quadrupedpetcare.com - u can order retail online or call their 800# and talk to Charlie. Order their All in One dematting spray or the Yucca de-matting spray - but remember u must use a high velocity dryer to aid in the removal of the tangles. My customers love this product too - they say their dogs actually stay cleaner longer. |
