Another question for people with more than 1 ok, since harley is 100% potty trained the ex pen and the nite time crate have been put away for a while now. he now sleeps with us in the bed or where ever he ends up. he uses the doggy door to go on the porch in the middle of the nite if he has to go. anyway, when you bring the new pup home, i'm assuming you have to break out all the crates and pens and repeat the training process.... how did your older dog react to that?? don't the 2 want to be together??, if they are getting along fine. when the pup whines at night like they normally do at first how did the older react to that?? i do not think harley would want to sleep in the crate now that he is used to sleeping in the bed, or do they normally not care since they are together?? :confused: our nite time crate is one of those huge ones so there is a bed at one end and potty area at the other. this nite time thing is really what i'm worrying about the most. please let me know how you guys did it and your routine and how everything turned out.?? thanks in advance!:) |
Yes Please! I am planning on another. And my husbnd is really leary about the nights. How does having a new baby in the house affect the older sibling? |
My older dog Toby has always slept in his own nighttime crate since the day we brought him home and now Shelby Rose has her own nightime crate sitting right next to Toby's in our bedroom. When Shelby occasionally cries in the middle of the night to go out, she sometimes wakes up Toby and he then gets in the big bed with us (for the remaining couple hours till morning) and Shelby goes back to her crate. I like letting them have their own sleep space at night instead of piling into the big bed with us so everyone is comfortable and can get some sleep without rolling into each other. |
We had to completely start over w/ Marcel. And, adult dog doesn't "train" the pup, as I had thought.... |
I didn't crate train mine but I did use an x-pen and babygates. When we got Spike, Gracie was trained. We broke out the x-pen and babygates for Spike and didn't have any problems. I don't work so I did have Spike out a lot so he and Gracie were able to play but if I was busy or leaving the house he went into the x-pen. He didn't being confined of course but it didn't bother Gracie. |
With Slade he was crated in my bedroom. I made sure to wear him out before I put him in the crate. Laney did not want to be with him. Having him sleep in the crate and her in the bed allowed her to get some alone time with Mommy so things weren't so different. Even though the dogs may love each other the dog that was there first is used to having all your attention and will still want just some "Mommy &me" time without the other dog. Now that slade is more or less potty trained he spends some nights in the bed and some in the crate and he is fine with it either way. |

When I brought Hannah home, I did the same to her as I did w/ Maggie - the 1st night she slept in their doggy bed by my bed... the following nights she slept w/ us in the big bed:D Since I have insomnia, when she wanted to go potty I helped her...:rolleyes: :D |
