Feeding time Hello everyone I got cooper last Saturday(he is 16 weeks old) and I have started a schedule for his feeding 9am, 2pm and 7pm then we go to bed around 10. So my question is, is this good for him? As soon as I put the food down he eats it all up I don't want him to get fat and I don't want to be under feeding him I am also thinking when he is older he will only need to eat twice a day so how many hours should I space that out? Also do you guys leave water down all day for your dogs I have been but I'm not sure if I should reduce it before we go to bed lessing the chance he'll get up during the night I am open to all answers and help thank you in advance Jess and Cooper |
I think having a routine is great! Sounds like your timing is good and he's eating well, just make sure he's getting the required amount of food for his size and age so you know you're not under (or over) feeding him =) It should be on the label of your dog food. Also, I read that you should always leave water out for your dog so they can have access to it. As for when he's older, I'm wondering where you heard that he needs to eat only twice? I've read that older dogs should get 3 meals, and younger puppies (maybe less than 12 wks) get about 4. In any case, I'd feed him in the morning and night and maybe in the middle of the day (the way you're feeding him now). I'd just make sure he's getting the required amount according to his size and age. Hope that helps! |
I home cook for Jake, and I feed him 3-4 times a day. Sometimes he doesn't want that 4th meal. I also leave kibble down all the time for him in case he wants that. He just nibbles at it a little during the day. ALWAYS leave fresh water out at all times. |
My Lily is almost 4 months also. I feed her 3 times a day, very similar to your schedule. She eats it all up too! I read in a yorkie book that once the pup hits 6 months, you can change it to 2x a day( maybe like 9am and 5pm? Someone please correct me if i'm wrong. I also leave her water out all day. So far though, I think you're on the right track! |
Lacy (3 years) eats twice a day and has water left out all the time. With a puppy you might want to regulate water intake as it will help with potty training, and I think it might be a good idea to take it away at night. |
What??!! How in the WORLD do yall get your babies to eat 'when you put it down'? Daisy is almost 9 months and I still can't seem to get her to eat when I put the food down for her. She's always been a ''picky'' eater and I have tried endlessly to get her down to a routine and it doesnt seem to work. I have tried to set up her meals everyday for the last 6 months at the same times [9 am, 3pm, 8pm-give or take a little] and the only way I would get her to eat immediately after I place her dish down is if I bribe her by adding ''treats'' (carrot bits or cherrios) to her food. Then she'll slob up the dish quicker than lightning...What do yall think is going on here? Please, any suggestions would be helpful!   |
 No one?... No suggestions? |
A schedule is good for all puppies. Good Luck keeping it!! |
I cook up a batch of food (lean ground turkey/vegetables)once a week for Lillybelle. I feed her about 2lbs tablespoons every morning when we get up and in the evening about 7:00pm. I leave dry food out all day-the weight mgmt dry food, nutru-natural-that she occasionally nibbles on, and water. Before I cooked for her and before she was spayed she never weighed over 4lbs. She was spayed at 1.5 yrs (last year). After being spayed, her wt went to 5lbs nearly immediately-the vet told me that was normal...she's not taller...just rounder and feels heavier...she's extremely active and we walk a mile or more nearly every day - she's perfect for us! :lovewings |
