New Puppy Hi. I just bought a yorkie from a very dishonorable breeder. I guess I wasn't very smart. My puppy was 8 wks on Saturday. He was the last puppy out of 3. It was late at night. The breeder told me he was 2- 2 1/2 lbs and would be about 6 lbs. I took him to the vet on Monday and found out he was 3#7oz. Called the breeder Monday. Still insists he'll be 6#. I'm afraid I'm gonna have a big yorkie now when I wanted a small one. His name is Scooter. He's adorable and I love him already but wanted a small yorkie as I already have 2 cairns. This breeder is in Washington, Illinois. I will be very happy to tell everyone her name if anyone wants to know. I had been looking for a yorkie for a long time but didn't want to drive far. I will post pictures as he gets older and BIGGER:) |
Have you tested him for genetic diseases or other problems yet? I'd worry that if she lied about his weight, what else would she lie about? Typically, the rule for weight is 3 times the 8 week weight, so you're probably going to have a good sized yorkie, 10-11 lbs. You never know though, maybe he just had a growth spurt, and his weight gain will slow down. Good luck with the new little one! I can't wait to see pictures! :D |
I agree with Anna. It's hard for a breeder to guarantee size, but she lied to you about his weight. Did you get to see the parents, or do you know what size they are? Of course, she may have lied to you about that too if you didn't see them. I have a smaller yorkie and there are times I wish he'd get bigger, as adorable as he is.:) He's a tough little guy, but we really have to be careful around him. They're so FAST....lol.....you'll see:) Congratulations and good luck with your new baby! Would love to see pics...we love pics around here! :D |
Welcome! "Teapot" or not--you won't know this anytime soon--he is still yours and he will love you unconditionally--you do the same and life will be so special! I would definitely want more information from the breeder, though, about mom/dad, records, etc.--that would put your mind at rest about any other problems he may/may not have. Welcome to YT! I can't wait to see pictures of your new baby--I have a new 13 week old yorkie (and little Emmy, who is 1 year). |
anything 10lbs and under is still a very small dog. NO BREEDER CAN DETERMINE AN ADULT SIZE. if they say they can, they are not being honest. there are many teapots (over 10lbs) here on yt. just love your little honey and give her the best of care. i would let the breeder know how displeased you are and even write a letter. maybe this way she may stop her practice of telling people adult size when it cannot be determined. |
The breeder lied to you about the current weight, and that was wrong. Still, no breeder can guarantee the adult weight. Some yorkies here were tiny when puppies and stayed tiny forever, but other were big puppies, but they didn't grow a lot, so they stayed small as adults. You never know... I would worry about him being healthy; that the most important thing; The weight, well, I think that's secondary, and although everybody has preferences, you'll find out that is not that important. If you are already falling in love with him, each day you love him more, and you'll love every ounce of him :) |
Big or small , this little one disserve to be loved . 6 - 7 pounds is not big for a Yorkie . No matter the weight , the little one will always have big love in his heart for you. |
I know that feeling but you just never know I bought a little girl and I wanted her to be 4lb and she is only 3 and is 7 month old. May not make it. Since then I bought another adult female and she was everything the lady said in fact she is going to have puppie the last of this July. I can hardly wait. She is only 4.8 lbs. Take him to the vet like the other person said make sure he is ok. |
