Barking when I'm gone for a long time... I dont have my yorki yet, but am trying to make sure i am ready for when the day comes. i have about 2 more months till it's time (like i'm pregnant or something!) I am a little worried, because i've heard that the yorkie's do not like to be by themselves for long periods of time. i am at work from 8-5 everyday, and so is my boyfriend. so it will for sure be alone for those hours monday - friday. are the rumors i have heard, true? ...if they are alone for too long, they start to bark, or chew things up? any advice will help...! |
My advice is to get another one:D I have 3 and when I leave the house they are fine. Sorry I have no advice because I got Timmy and then a week later I got Mimi. My kids were on summer break so Timmy wasn't home alone for that week. I just got Lilly about 2 weeks ago. They keep eachother company so I don't have to worry about one of them crying or barking...although they can bark all they want because this is their house:D Good luck and welcome to YT!!!! I have had no barking problems with Lucy so far, however, I followed advice on here and as much as her bark is adorable I discourage her barking. When she does bark (like when the doorbell rings, etc. I just tell her "thank you" and that's enough. She is at home during the day with our two cats (who treat her like their child) and she hasn't yet gotten destructive. I just make sure she has her toys. |
some don't really bark. but as puppies they do chew everything. see the toys forum for help with that. edgar ate carpet, paint off the walls, and even the trim on the walls. now he's 2 and i hope past that. |
When I first got my yorkie, I was home with her for the first two weeks. It helped her feel comfortable and I had time to watch her constantly and let her know what is and isn't acceptable. If you're getting a puppy it would probably be best to let him or her just have a closed off area to be in while you're away where he or she can't get at anything to destroy, other than toys of course! Kong toys are a great way to keep them occupied while you're gone. Now that my yorkie is a year and a half old she does well at home by herself... she pretty much just sleeps all day! Last year when I was still in college, I usually left the tv or radio on for her while I was in classes. It helps for seperation anxiety if they can hear voices so they don't feel so alone! They do get seperation anxiety though when they are young! I gated mine into the kitchen in a 4x4 area pretty much! Plenty of room for them, but small enough to minimize damage! They did chew what they could though, which means the bottoms of my cabinets are all chewed up! Get an indoor playpen or xpen to put them in so they cannot chew walls & such (mine did a nice huge hole in my kitchen wall!!! :eek: ) leave them a radio on to drown out noises from outside. They generally bark when they hear noises, a radio on will block some of the noise and minimize barking. Leave them food, water, toys, their bed and chew bones or something that will entertain them for 8 hours! Good Luck :D Its worth it!!! :D |
