Excessive Barking! Ok, my dog Kelsey is being quite the little terror lately. She will stare at me and bark, bark, bark. And if i say "NO bark" and go towards her she'll run away, come back and do the same thing! :rolleyes: So It does seem like she wants my attention, yes i know...but when i give it to her she just keeps barking its really annoying! Any suggestions? :animal-sm |
Nicole- it does sound like she is barking to get your attention. if you give her attention when she barks, then you are giving her positive reinforcement, so basically you are rewarding her for barking. When I was training Tino when he was a puppy and now Bunny... when they are barking like that and looking at me to get my attention, I deliberately turn my back at them and say nothing. This lets them know that they get the opposite of what they want (attention) when they bark. Its really important not make any eye contact or say anything when you do this. I know there are many ideas about how to get them not to yap, I read this in a puppy training book and its worked for me. Tino and Bunny only bark when they hear a strange noise or they are "warning" me about something which I am thankful for. I feel that when they look at you and bark its considered "yapping." That is what bothers people and their neighbors, but a dog that barks bc its their nature is just being a dog! Hope this helps! :) |

Yes exactly she is wanting my attention and I can totally see how it'd be positive reinforcement acknowledging she's there. :rolleyes: I know i need to turn my back on her when she does this...i just dont want her to bark, so i tell her "no bark" and she'll just bark more! grrr...I will try what you told me thanks! |
I would do that too when they he would bark at first when I got him... I would say "No Bark!", but what I read in the book is that if you acknowledge their barks, they look at it as if you are "talking/barling" back at them. Bunny has been harder to train than Tino, bc sometimes if I'm inthe kitchen, she'll want people food and will bark at me and when I turn my back to her, she'll follow me, so I have to either walk away from her or I sit down in a chair and just act like she isnt there and that I can't hear her. She doesnt stop immediately, but she does get bored quickly and just walks away. I get really nervous about doing this bc I live in a condo and I'm afraid my neighbors are going to complain, but I know if I don't get a handle on it, then she's gonna be a yapper! Good luck!
