Whats the Difference and Whats Better?? :confused: Ok Ive been wanting to get a Yorkie so lately ive been looking into it...and I see different kinds,such as the Squirrel and Teacup Yorkie So now my question is whats the difference and which one is better? |
Welcome to YorkieTalk, MexChik! I believe that "Squirrel" Yorkies refers to a kennel which raises Yorkshire Terriers ... not a "type" ... our Toto was bought from "Tyava" which is their kennel name. I am not certain how to describe "Teacup" except that the AKC doesn't recognize it as a breed. They are the little tiny ones and I have heard lots say that there is no such thing as a teacup and, on the other hand, I have heard some say that there is! Go figure!! :) We have some members who are breeders that hopefully respond and can give you an excellent explaination! ;) |
I think that "squirrel" and "teacup" probably refers to size. I have heard that a Yorkie is a Yorkie and much like other breeds, some are just smaller than others. The teeny tinies can sometimes come with their own problems, so the most important thing to consider when asking "what's the difference and what's better" is to shop around and do your homework. Buy from a reputable breeder. Ask to see the parents and beware a breeder that won't show them to you. A lot can be seen in the parents. When we decided on Oscar, it was largely due to his sister from a previous litter. Her personality was wonderful...her temperment was wonderful. Her mom was nervous but it was because we were looking at her 5 day old puppies. We picked Oscar at 6 weeks as he was the most outgoing pup we had a choice from. The dad was out to stud so we were not able to see him but the breeder cheerfully showed us his pics. We were fortunate to be able to see the sibling from the first litter though...so far, Oscar is just like her. Good luck in making your choice. There is no such thing as a tea-cup yorkie,a squirel yorkie,or any other fancy names some breeders may use..this is just a way to make yorkies sound wonderful or rare and this way up the price;) A yorkie is a yorkie,they are all one and the same:) I once heard that a yorkie and a yorkshire terrier were two different "kinds" of yorkie,but this is not true either.I have 2 yorkies,my oldest one,Lady is a year old and weighs 2lbīs,whilst my youngest one,Jessica,is 7 months old and now weighs 7lbīs...are they different kinds of yorkie? Nope,they are just different sizes..nothing more:) You cant register a yorkie as a tea-cup,a babyface,or a squirel yorkie because as I said before,these names are just fancy terms some breeders use to charge that much more;) |

Yes, MexChik, finding a good breeder is very important! We hear a lot of sad stories of Yorkies not being taken care of and sold while sick. Some of them don't make it and die because of the breeder not getting them shots, etc! :( |
I have never heard of a squirrel yorkie. Hmmm.......although we have been known to call Otis "Rat Bastard" at times. |
There is a kennel called Squirrel Yorkies, but I have never heard of a squirrel yorkie. No such thing as a Tea cup Yorkie, just a ploy to charge more for them. The standard for a yorkie according to AKC is that the should not be over 7 pounds, but yorkies range from 2 pounds to 18 pounds, and they are all purebred yorkies. You can not show any of them over 7 pounds or you will be excused from the ring. A yorkie that is referred to as baby faced is just one of the yorkies that has a shorter snout. They are still all yorkies. I have 9 yorkies and they are all different sizes and looks. I have a couple baby faced ones, and some have shorter legs than the others. Right now my smallest is one of the pups at 1 1/2 pounds and the larges it my older boy Mickey at 8+ pounds. |
