my 9 week old yorkie ears are not upright I am worried about my 9 week old puppy, his ears are not upright should I be concerned? And what are good treats to give your puppy? My Tanner is on a combination of Nutrience junior and Royal Canin mini baby dog and he doesn't seem fond of the food! I know it's not good to change a puppy diet because it causes diarrhea but it's sad to see your puppy hesitate about eating . |
I personally taped her ears for about 1 week and her ears are sticking up it worked!!!! |
I was reading the Royal Canin mini babydog bag and I thought it was for dogs up to 8 weeks? You might look into their next step up (mini puppy I think) otherwise, I just started Cody (9 weeks) on "Nutro Natural Choice Small Bites Puppy Chicken, Rice & Oatmeal Formula" and he seems to really like that. As for the ears, what they do at 9 weeks doesn't seem to always be a determining factor of what they're going to turn out as |

It could take months for ears to stay up. Keep shaving the top third or so of the ear and taped. |
I find that if you keep the top 2/3 of the inside & outside of the ears shaved that the begin to stand on their own without tape! Plus I know alot of people with yorkies and theirs are all very picky eaters! Mine dogs tried to be picky then they relized that I wasn't going to give in! Find a food you like and stick to it. |

That is the TRUTH! Turbo will wait to eat until he realizes I am not going to give in. Then, he looks at me in the kitchen and takes a bit and looks at me with those "do I HAVE to eat this?" eyes. Too funny. |
Try shaving the hair off the back of the ears, and then fold the ear horizontally and tape it that way. Keep it on about a week and then take it off and see if they stand up. Usually this will work, but it's possible they will fall down in a day or two, so just repeat it. Don't wait too long though because you don't want the cartilage to harden and they'll never stand up. I had a puppy whose one ear would not stand up more than a day after doing this. I'd retape it for several days, it would stay up a day and flop back down. Her other ear stayed up after one taping. I gave up on the other ear, so she has one floppy ear, but that gives her some character. My vet said that sometimes if their ears are too big, they have to trim them smaller to make them stand up. This would be a last resort to me! |
I don't know why upright ears would be a big deal. I mean, if it's only a cosmetic complaint... Hell, ours is 13 weeks old and one ear isn't up all the way. |
I wouldn't be too concerned. Lacy's weren't up until 3 months and then went up and down some for almost a month. Some go up real early and some take longer. |
It's because Yorkies are supposed to have ears that are up, according to AKC standards, but some people like them down. If you aren't going to show your Yorkie, it probably doesn't matter. I personally like them up because they look more like a Yorkie should. But some just never go up. My Kayli looks a little lopsided with one ear up and one down, but she also looks kind of cute like that. |
Shave the hair off the top part of the ear , both sides of the ear, and massage the ears. now and then. That worked for us. Good Luck! I love the ears up look!:aimeeyork :) |
