First yorkie. Hi, I just bought my very first yorkie (and first dog ever) and I am just looking for advice on what brand of food is the best to buy. I'm also wondering if anyone knows any good books on how to train my puppy. Thanks! |
Congratulations on the new baby boy or girl???name???age???pictures??? i am not an authority on food or training (neither of mine are catching on to the training part), but they sure can eat. many YTers recommend Canidae food...i received some samples in the mail last week and my yorkies really seem to like it. i have not found a supplier in my area, though. since it was just sample sizes, i am using it as treats. my normal food i am using is the Royal Canin--it is readily available at Petsmart. both of mine like it--Emmy is a little picky and it is one of the few that she will really eat. :welcome4: :welcome4: :welcome4: to YorkieTalk!!!!! :D :goodluck: with the new puppy! |
I use Dick Van Pattens Natural Balance. There is a thread on here rating all of the dog foods. It got an A+ and one of the highest scores. There are several high quality foods, it just depends on what your dog will eat. |
Congratulations, and welcome to YT! Yes, yes, we need stats and pics. I just switched to Canidae from Nutro Natural Choice. It's certainly not the only good food out there, but I feel confident it's safe and healthy for them. I can't think of any good books off the top of my head, but I would recommend a puppy obedience class at your local Petco or obedience school. Anything to get your dog socialized. It's very important that you get your pup used to other dogs and people at a young age. A good way to research specific tops here is to use the search tool at the top of the screen. Good luck. Can't wait to see pics. |
Congratulations. Can't wait to see pics of your furbaby! |
chester eats solid gold wee bits for dogs under 20 lbs, the adult food, canidaie, innova, solid gold are good and other foods as well, stay away from iams, science diet and euakanuba, pedigree. Dog food with by products corn, wheat, bha, bht nasty preservatives. Look at the first first ingredients no corn wheat by products and good protein sources. |
Welcome and congratulations!:) |
Welcome to YT and Congrats. there is a really helpful site when it comes to researching foods. The link is www.dogfoodanalysis.com I read through all of the most common brands mentioned on here and I decided to go with Innova because it's holistic (meaning only whole parts no by-products) and reading the ingredients list I would want to eat it. There are other great foods but I thought I'd share what I chose seeing as how I'm a first time dog/yorkie owner also. My Sophie is only 14 weeks. She is great! ohh and by the way if you choose to read about the food on that site, skip the 6 star foods as they are too high in protein for yorkies. Hope this can help you with your decision! |
Thanks for the site! Do any of you change your furbabies food? I often thought about mixing merricks dry with Canidae. I switched to Canidae when Lillie was about 5 months old. Sadie, 3 yrs old, kept eating the puppies food...So I switched to something they could both eat. Sadie has always been a very picky eater. I haven't had a problem with her since I switched to Canidae.. |
