Ellie used to wear a collar all the time (even when we went away). It was probably too loose and she got one of her nails caught in it. There is way to much of a risk in my opinion to leave a collar on them unsupervised. Your dog could get hung up on anything that way. |
I only have collars on the monkeys if I'm home with them! They were playing once and Hallie grabbed Simon's collar and it got wrapped around her jaw and was choking Simon. I had to cut it to get it unstuck. Since then I've gotten them the break away cat collars and put them on as soon as I get home but take them off when they are secure in my bedroom. |
Autumn always has a collar w/tags on unless she goes in her crate. She is also mircochipped. She is not a big fan of the name tag hanging but I would rather be safe then sorry! |

I'm so sorry. When I hear this (and I've heard it before) it makes me afraid to collar... |

i didn't want to collar edgar, but i have both our dogs collared with tags that have my phone number on them. this is mainly because he's a bolter, a digger, and a houdini. they really only make noise when he's scratching. i have had a few people pick him up and carry him down the street (when i haven't noticed immediately that he's missing) and it ticks me off that since he's so small they think nothing of taking him home!! luckily he seems to be outgrowing this stage (he's a bit past 2 now) |
there are places (www.angiesembroidery.com) to get collars with the name and phone numbers embroidered on it, nothing to make noise...and microchipping is a great idea ... |
hey Janie, can you post that link again?? it doesn't seem to work... Thanks! |

Shadow's is a little loose for him too but I don't worry near as much as if he had a collar that was loose or whatever...I wouldn't worry to much about the harness being a bit to big...just keep an eye on him as much as you can! Shadow usually isn't to far from my sight most of the time, except when we go away and then he is in his crate and then he doesn't have it on anyway.... |
I don't do collars for walking...I love harnesses.....and you can still put cute charms, etc on the harness. The collar would be for just wearing around the house w/ the tags on it...just in case. Even if there were microchipped, the collar w/ ID should still be on...OR I think anyway. If they got lost, the person that found them might not be able to get to a vet to check for a chip (many people outside of the dog world may not even know about the chips either)...and that way, the tag will have the name/numbers/etc to call and maybe even an address. Those are my thoughts! |
We only put a collar or harness on Mugzy when we go out the front door. The backyard is fenced and we go out back with him for potty time. Our trainer suggested NOT leaving any collar or harness on in the crate, or if you aren't around to watch them because of choking hazards. I know my two big dogs were SCREAMING one day and when I ran out to see what happened, one's jaw was somehow locked onto the other's collar and it was horrendous trying to untangle two hysterical dogs. I do, by the way, keep a baby gate at the front door, because Mugzy has run out the front door a few times, and a kitty harness might be a better size. We also got him microchipped when he got fixed, it was only like $25. |
I do the same thing as Robbin. I never put their collars on if they are left at home alone. Too many horror stories. They have the rolled leather collars, and I have only a tiny St. Joseph tag (pink of course) with their name and phone number. They are microchipped also. I find the regular harnesses can matt the hair or actually rub the hair off and cause redness on their skin. The step-in harnesses are not all that safe since they can back up and out of them. I use the car harness with padded sternum area, or put little t-shirts on them and their other harnesses over that. |
When I first got my two they didn't wear their collar or their tags very often - same reason as your... BUT then I thought about the horrible thing that would happen if thye got out of the house and they did not have their tags. You can buy silencers for the tags so they don't jingle. I hardly ever hear the tags - they only wear the info tag. |
