Vet Visit=2 Problems I recently took my new puppy TJ to the vet for his 2nd set of shots and we found out he has two health problems. The first is that he has ear mites. The vet gave him a dose of Revolution, and he is going to get another dose in a month when we have his next visit. We also found out that he has a problem with his male parts. The vet said that one testicle didn't drop and the other is very small. He said that if the other one does not drop by 6 months when we get him neutered, he will have to try to find it in TJ's abdomen and the surgery will be more serious. Has anyone else had an experience with one not dropping? :confused: I'm worried about my little baby! |
problems All problems are serious and I am not making light of yours...but compared to the posts we get here, you are lucky. Ears mites are not good for a breeder to have in the kennel..all the dogs get infested, it makes them scratch and uncomfortable. The meds will correct it and they will be gone. The missing testicule may appear, but if not it can be removed when he is neutered..and that will take care of that...best wishes |
I've heard of it...but I've only ever had females. From what I hear...it just makes the surgery more like spaying. So he will have tummy stitches. I wouldn't worry about it. You weren't planning to breed him were you? |
I'm going through the same thing with Tucker. My vet told me to wait until he was about a year to see if the other testicle drops. She said that boys can wait a little longer than girls to be neutered because there aren't as many health risks. Also, she said that it takes a little longer in smaller breeds. She also said exactly what Syndney's Mom said - if the testicle didn't drop the surgery would just be more like spaying, but it is fairly common. Good luck! |
Thanks for all the replies. My vet also said it would be more like spaying, but isn't spaying more serious that just neutering, especially if they have to go looking for it. I don't know. We aren't going to wait a year to get him neutered though, only 6 months, because my vet said the longer you wait, the more they will pick up traits on un-neutered males such as spraying and wanting to spend more time alone rather than with the family. I hope he's okay! Thanks again for everyone's help! |
OK, I learned something here, and boy am I stupid! I didn't realize that the testicles "drop" (I've never had a male puppy) Anyway, Tucker was laying on his back getting his belly rubbed last night and I was looking at him and my first thought was OMG the breeder gave me the female puppy by mistake! LOL I was wondering how I was going to ask her, and then stressing that we would have to change his name. See what important things you learn on YT? |

A breeder that I talked to (been breeding Yorkies 25+ years) said that now days, in male dogs/pups, this is becoming more common. It is genetic and if you are looking for a stud dog, you need to check for this. She had to take back a pup that never dropped either testicles. |
I hear, don't know if it's true, that if the dogs are handled a lot or carried most of the time that this attributes to their testicles not dropping. |
