Filling the Knowledge Gap

Breeding quality dogs is among the most challenging of human endeavors, combining several scientific disciplines—genetics, nutrition, and biomechanics—with aesthetics, that innate “eye” for a dog that comes close to the image of perfection that is described in the breed standard.

While some luck is involved, being a good breeder is more than a matter of putting two animals together and hoping for the best. Nevertheless, there is no school, no licensing, no certification programs for people interested in meeting the challenge.

Interesting article. Sounds like lots of things on the horizon. Wish they had classes for regular non scientific people like myself to explain all of the gentetic stuff in laymans terms.

It's sad isn't it? We too often see a lot of people asking general questions about breeding so I would think that a lot of people would find this article informative and interesting.

I did and I'm not even a breeder~

I saw the title and clicked without knowing the subject matter. I'm not a breeder and don't plan to ever be one, and still found it interesting to read. Some that breed don't want to further their knowledge - unfortunately.:(

I do have an interest in someday possibly showing dogs and currently love attending shows. And, anything I learn about the subject of breeding would only help in my enjoyment of shows, even if only as a sidelines viewer and lover of this breed. I believe it helps to understand what you are looking for in the ring.

I know this is an old thread but... I thought it was interesting. If I were a breeder I would definately want to go. :thumbup:

When I got my 1st yorkies I never dreamed I would want to breed this breed I have never done anything like this before. Well I knew nothing when I got my 1st male (never knew about YT then) then I got a female and bred the 2 together, since then I found YT and I have read and talked with people about breeding and found that I was way off course as far as breeding within the standard. So I have spayed & neutered all my dogs done my homework as far as getting a new girl to breed and hope and pray that I am doing things the right way now cause all I want to do is breed to better the breed.
I have talked with many breeders trying to find someone to mentor me in breeding these guys and never thought it would be this hard to find someone willing to take the time to teach someone (I know the basics) . There are no breeder's (except 1 and she is learning also we talk on a weekly basis) that live near me that I would feel confidant that would be teaching me correctly. I am currently going to confromation classes to learn more but what else is a person suppose to do , I go to show's that I can get to within a reasonable distance.
I have seen great breeder's that I have talked with many times come and go here on YT. I know breeding can be a cut throat bussiness but it's a shame to see what it is doing to some of these people really makes me wonder if it's really worth it or not. I love the breed and will probably stick it out but if I am not mentored by someone that is well known for breeding than I will be called a BYB and I know for a fact that I am better than that.
And Kim this is great reading I have saved it along with many other things.\Thanks for the info.
