My Yorkie is 8 months old and has started to bite me when I don't pay attention to him, as when I am sitting down reading a book or watching TV and he wants to play. He becomes ferocious and lunges at me biting. I have tried all kinds of ways to prevent this but sometimes have to resort to putting him in his crate which I hate to do as it is "his safe place." He seems to know why he's there and later when I take him out he is fine until he feels slighted and starts biting again. Does anyone have that problem?

I think that, first and foremost, you have to try to anticipate when this is going to happen and give him attention BEFORE he resorts to bad behavior. You don't want him to have a chance to practice bad behavior.

Also, you need to understand that for many pups (like many human kids), negative attention is better than no attention. He'd rather that you yell at him and carry him to "time out" than for you to sit there ignoring him. So, by letting him go that far and then giving him negative attention, you might be inadvertently rewarding the bad behavior.

Try to pay attention to him before this happens. You might also give him a stuffed kong or a nice chewy bone when you know you're not going to be giving him the attention he craves. Do it before he misbehaves.

Bare in mind that this is temporary. He will eventually outgrow this - especially if you are careful not to accidently reinforce it.

I agree with FirstYorkie. Another thing you can do is to keep a chew toy close by at all times. I could read and hold on to a little bone while Adie chewed on it or played tug-o-war. It kept her entertained. Now all she does is noses her way between me and the book I'm reading. She just lays there staring at me like she has lost her best friend. It is hard to ignore. LOL

Yes, good idea! And to go along with that, you can teach a "get your toy" command.

Joey has been told "get your toy" so many times when he's wound up that he will now stop himself at those times and go get a toy. It's really cool to watch when he gets excited (like when company comes over), you can see that moment in his thinking when he goes "Oh, boy. oh, boy. How exciting. Someone new. Oh boy, oh....WAIT! Where's my toy? I need a toy so I don't get in trouble. There it is! I got it. Will you play with me. Huh? Please?". Makes me proud!

Much better to have him nudging you with a toy than to have him biting you, right?
