Can Yorkies swim in a pool? I hope this isn't a silly question but I am filling up my pool for the summer and was wondering if my Yorkie can swim in it? It is 5 feet deep. Does the chlorine affect their skin? He has never been in a pool before so I wonder if he will automatically do the doggie paddle or should I buy him a life vest? |
Well I don't know about the chlorine but my little Lilly certainly has her doggy paddle down! We went to the lake to play as it was so hot and I decided to take a dip, she happily followed... check out pictures on www.lynnwatkins.net under Third week. Infact, she was back in the water today. She certainly doesn't mind one or two quick dips but wouldn't want to spend all day in the water. :D |
There was a really good thread not long ago about this. I learned a LOT. Just do a search on "pool" or "swim" and you'll probably find it. There are some issues with keeping their head up, vests, chlorine options and all. |

1 Attachment(s) My dog went swimming yesterday in my dad's pool that has chlorine in it and he is fine. I don't think it's bad for them. |
You definitely want a life preserver vest |
Anyone know where you can find one of those preserver vests fro yorkies? I put Chloe in the pool the other day, but I held her the whole time. I was afraid to let her go on her own. |
my yorkie goes in the pool with us, we either hold him or put him on our float..he loves it.. Nancy, Sami & Lily |

we were swimming the other day and typically we wont let frankie in the back yard or inside the gate to the swimming pool but he was whinning cause he thought we were hurt from screaming around jumping and he was just wondering around and then i was asking hubby can he swim or would he drown and hubby said he didnt know think he would drown cause they know to swim and dog paddle and not more than a few econds later KAPLOP he fell in the deep end of the pool and i freaked out and starting swimming towards him and he just started dog paddling around to me and i was like omg and i grabbe dhim and pulled him up out of the water and he was still dog paddling out of scaredness  in the air but i dont know personally about the chlorine becuase that was the only time he was in the pool, but i would think they would know how to dog paddle but they are kids you have to watch their every move |
i know that tinkerbells closet has swim suits but it seems they said she has the life jackets to maybe you could check out her store and see im sure someone here on yt will know or maybe sell them on here |
Thanks, Lilly is just too adorable... but then again that's what we all think of our furbabies!! My advice, go in with your little puppy and hold them under the belly and see. The first few times we went to the lake Lilly was not interested in the water. But then it was hot and we had her stick so she just followed to get her toy back! :D I have read that you should hose down your dog after swimming in a chlorine pool... much the same as you would your kids, but I don't really know... My garden is too small for a pool :( |
we put Lillian in the pool all the time and she swims and holds herself up, the chlorine hasn\'t affected her either |
