Getting First Yorkie Today. Need Advice. iam very new to this site, just signed up today, this will be my first yorkie (ive always wanted one) i will be picking him up today around 6pm, i will post pictures when i get him, but i wanted some opinions from others who have had yorkies before, and i also have a few questions, btw he was born 4/18/07 what would you recommend to feed him? and would you recommend soft and hard mix? what toys would you recommend? what treats would you recommend? would you recommend training him on pads or doggie litter? would you recommend brushing his teeth this early? iam out of town right now on vacation, and couldnt resist him, when i saw him, so i will be flying home with him on saturday |
what would you recommend to feed him? and would you recommend soft and hard mix? I would start off feeding him hard food, but if he isn't eating well, then you can mix soft and hard or soften the hard food with a little bit of warm water. I would recommend the foods: Canidae, Wellness, Solid Gold, Innova, Merricks. I would recommend the wet food Evangers. You can go to their websites to see where to buy close to you. what toys would you recommend? Anything small and squeeky. Just go to the pet store and buy small toys that you can throw and that are small enough for your yorkie to pick up in it's little mouth. what treats would you recommend? I'm very very picky about treats. I like treats you can find in your home. Cheerios are good. Carrots, small pieces of broccoli, pieces of boiled chicken all make good treats. The treats in the pet store have too much nasty junk in them for us. would you recommend training him on pads or doggie litter? I can't comment on this because I train outside. would you recommend brushing his teeth this early? I would definately recommend starting to brush his teeth early so he'll get used to it. |
curious? Just curious do you know the babies weight? And he is just over 8 weeks old? |

I'm getting my little Kalina tomorrow. She was born April 1st and weighs 2lbs 4oz. She's small but has good weight on her. The breeder feeds her Royal Canin Puppy and mixes a couple spoonsful of baby food beef or chicken in there to soften it up. She said that Kalina gobbles it up. I will not be feeding her any treats at all until she is much older and only healthful treats at that point. I asked the breeder about training this morning and she recommends the puppy pads in combination with crate training. I'll find out more about this tomorrow when I actually pick her up. I bought her some very tiny squeaky toys that almost look like baby toys - they are made just for small dogs. Good luck! |

I could be mistaken, but I thought I read on here one time that baby food is bad for yorkies?? Maybe you want to do a search and make sure that is a good thing to be giving your baby. Just thought I'd put in my :twocents: And good luck to both of you with new puppies. That search tool is a great thing...trust me! Oh, and be SURE to post pics, of course :D |

yes i read that too |
YT is awsome :yorkietal :animal-pa Congrats on your pups it is so exciting.Yorkies are the best.:aimeeyork My vet said that only specific baby foods are bad. Like the veggies or anything with onion or garlic powder. If I give Bella any its beef or chicken. She likes that. I had Bella on Royal Cannin too when she was a puppy but it gave her skinky gas so beware.lol:D Pee Pads are awsome they are so easy and they work, litter is kinda messy. just my 2cents. |
what would you recommend to feed him? and would you recommend soft and hard mix? I say hard food (free feed) - I would go with Canidae - www.canidae.com - Make sure he has access to food and water 24/7. Also pick up some Nutri Cal as well. what toys would you recommend? Soft, plush, noise makers. Always inspect each toy, can it hurt him? Can he eat it? Lots of toys look cool, but if they can be dangerous in any way, they aren't worth it. what treats would you recommend? The only treats that I buy from the dog food store is: Pure Rewards (Wellness). I am really cauious about what I feed. No Corn, No Wheat, No Grains (in any form of text). No By-Products (in any form of text). NOTHING EVER Made in China!!!! NOTHING EVER that says "Not for Human Consumption" or anything similar to that ;) would you recommend training him on pads or doggie litter? I use pee pads inside of a doggie litter box. Less room for error (peeing on the floor). I have heard they tend to eat or just play with the doggie litter would you recommend brushing his teeth this early? Yes! PICTURES - PICTURES - PICTURES!!! |
i agree with all the above advice and i feed and such the same i just want to see pictures of your little bindle of fluff also i heard the some baby food is bad, nothing with garlic i think it is and someone said no veggies and no turkey i know they said you can feed the chicken, cause when franks was netured friday they said if he wouldnt eat you can boil chicken for him or you can get some baby food in chicken flavor for him but im not sure on the others, well take care and good luck with your new pup |
TLC gave you excellent advice. You can also find other good food options at www.dogfoodanalysis.com. I feed Merrick. My dogs are on dry which for me is so much easier. They used to get wet and their faces stay much cleaner with the dry so if your baby will eat dry that's what I would stick with. Congrats on your new baby and welcome to YT from one Florida Nikki to another!:) |
well i just spent 200+ on the little one at the store today, and hes keeping me up, its 3:17 where im at, thanks for all the advice guys, i will be posting pictures tomorrow, hes already went potty in his crate through the pad to reach his bedding  then only to wake up to him crying, thinking i made it in time to take him outside :( , the little guy is adorable, he cant stay still for the life of him, he wants to get into everything, my only concern right now is the cat, the cat doesnt like him at all, hes hissing at my little one, does anyone have any advice for that issue? thanks alot, and another question, what flea and tick control can i use on him if hes only eight weeks? also his ears are not up yet, could this pose a problem, or it normal for them not to be up now? cant wait to get the little one to our permanent home in FL, no cats, lol btw i will be taking him to the vet as soon as i get back in FL |
Congrats and Good Luck How are things this morning--sounds like you had a long night!?!?! Congratulations on your new puppy. Have you decided on a name? I can't wait to see pictures! :welcome4: :goodluck: |
Can't wait to see pics! It sounds like he was being a typical yorkie last night...lol...not funny for you! As far as the cat, I would be very careful, keep them in separate areas. And don't give him flea and tick stuff till 12 weeks (I'm pretty sure). Until then (or at least until he's finished with vaccines) I don't think he should be associating with dogs too much so he doesn't get anything. GOod luck and keep us posted! Those first two days were the hardest for me, but I would give anything to have this dog now :) Yorkies are the best:thumbup::aimeeyork |
