no longer confined???? I was wondering at what age you all let your dogs be not confined-(crate or playpen) while you are away. My puppy is about 6 1/2 months old and I pad and outside trained and is pretty much perfect with it. We live in a small loft apartment and have been keeping her in the bathroom when we leave but I am wondering if we could try leaving her in the living room - (her pad is there) and closing the bedroom doors so she has more room to play and can look out the windows. She has started chewing or scratching the door/door frame in the bathroom, I am assuming this is because she gets bored, but I dont think the building manager will be very happy about it. So..... back to my question, do your dogs/puppies have the run of the house or apt, or do you always keep them confined??? Thanks in advance! Ann |
Run of the house Bella has the run of the house but she is 4 1/2 years old. She was not allowed the run of th house till she was 1. I think it depends on the dog. I believe you are right about the scratching on the door. I would be bored locked in a small room all day. Having a window to look out makes all the difference. I have a Bay window and my sister made a cushion for it so Bella could sit comfortably in the window and look over her kingdom. She loves the window. Just make sure your little one has a safe way to get up the window and back down. Bella has a cushion on the floor and she hops from that (needs traction ref wood floors) and hops onto the recliner (which is pushed up against the bay) and then hops onto her cushion. Jay |
My two are 7 mos. and 6 1/2 mos. and I keep them in an x-pen in the kitchen when I'm gone. I give them run of the living room and kitchen when I'm home but notice that if I take too long taking a shower or going downstairs to the laundry room that they get into mischief - they've gnawed on the window blinds and gotten to the stereo wires - so I know they aren't ready for that much freedom yet:( |
I am lucky in that Conner wants to go to his xpen when we are gone. That is his comfort zone. When we are home, he has the run of the house. |
Emma was confined to an x-pen until her first birthday, and now she has the run of our very large master bedroom. She's never gotten into anything or pottyed in the wrong place, which we're very happy about! Milli is 6 months old, and in the x-pen in our room, so they have each other for company. Milli's not reliably potty trained yet, and still ilkes to chew  so we have to keep her penned up! I feel our house is too large to let Emma have free run of it all day. I worry that she could get trapped in a small space, or get into something that we accidentally left out. I think she's got enough space to run around, play, sleep, and socialize with Milli in just our bedroom alone. |
Mine are older and i still dont let them have free roam, unless im just running a short errand, karleigh i can let stay out and she is a angel, but the boys, what one dont think of the other does:rolleyes: |
Miko has had free run of the house since he was about 5 months, I think?? and only because he was totally potty trained :) Also, we have puppy proofed everything! There's a baby gate so that they can't get into the formal dining room though. And we close the guest bedroom doors while we're gone, but leave our master bedroom door open b/c they love to lay on our bed :) And Emma has had free run of the house since we got her at about 7 months. She goes potty where she is supposed to, and we don't want to keep her and Miko separated from each other. They would go nuts without each other :) |
I keep Max confined and he was a year old in April. You have to know your own dog. He's so little and I'm afraid he'll get stuck somewhere or get hurt by something I didn't think of. He's also pretty mischievous. He's also in the bathroom, but the door is open and there's a baby gate there. I also have music in there for him, water, a pee pad and treats. He sleeps when I'm gone. |
I agree with judyeve...Each dog is different, and only you know if he would be okay :) My doggies sleep while I'm gone too :) |
One will be 2 in Sept and the other will be 3 in Jan. They have just recently gotten run of the house when we are home and when we go out they are confined to the kitchan and family room (which is a large area) |
If I were you, I would probably give it a try and let her be unconfined. Just try it and if it doesn't work out, just put her back in the bathroom. |
Emmy and Oscar have the kitchen and family room when we are gone...but when we are home they are also allowed in the bedroom. Emmy used to have free roam of the bedroom before Oscar came into our lives. He runs up the stairs to the bed, but does not know how to get down--I am afraid he will fall off the bed. Therefore, I close off the bedroom when we are gone now. |
Laney was only confined about 2 wks when we lived in a Apt that demanded it. Otherwise she has always been given free run of my bedroom when I am gone. Slade will not be given free run until we move out of our place now and that will be when he is a yr. He is 5 mnthhs now, but i don't trust him yet to not chew things. |
Thank you so much for the replies! I think I will try leaving her out for an hour or two today while I am downstairs at the pool, hopefully it goes well!!;) |
If we are at work, ours is in her kennel (she is six). When I am ready to leave for work, she just goes in.:) I come home at lunch to let her out, or I have my daughter come over. She is also in there if we are gone for more than a couple hours. We have done that all of her life, but we have started letting her have the run of the house more in the last couple years if we are only gone 2 hours or so. She will still leave us a surprise  if she has to go and we are not there. When we are home, she has had the run of the house since she was about one. In the last year, we have noticed that she sleeps more, and we can trust her more, but it has really taken a long time.:aimeeyork |
